Disregard last entry
This place is wonderful but small, so yes, it can accidentally be rough around the edges dealing with so many people. However, the food is good, the beer is the best in the city, and it is a fun, neighborly, place.

Let Down
My Girlfriend and I stopped in the other night after wanting to try this place for a year now. We asked if we could see a menu and found an empty spot by the bar to check it out(there were a few empty spots). We didn't even get a chance to make up our minds, we were there for 2 minutes when a waiter came by and snapped the menu out from under our hands...So we left, and from reading a few of the previous reviews, this type of treatment seems to be common. Too bad...I've been to Germany and miss the the food, but I will not be treated like that! Customer Service is important to me, and should be to businesses...

Best of German food
I lived in Germany most of my life and this is the closest you will get to German food in New York. The price is a little above average but the food is better than most other German places in the city. German food in New York = Heidelberg. I have been to Heidelberg many times and will definitely come back! (Insider tip... try the sunday brunch!)

Cozy place, rude service
Place was warm, cozy and the food was great. However, we were shocked when the waitress boldly asked us if we disliked her service because she was unsatisfied with the tip. My date was not stingy and since he was a foreigner he was unfamiliar with American tipping custom. He would have gladly given her more if she was not so rude to just stand there expecting more money.

Excellent
Amazing beer. Great atmosphere. Good food. A hidden gem on 2nd avenue. Try the boot with warsteiner and the chicken schnitzel.

Old German Food
My husband is German -American and he and his family speak fluent German- so we know German food. We were disappointed w/Heidelberg. In the 70s, 80s when Yorkville was known as "Germantown" the food at Heidelberg was find. We went several weeks ago and we were disappointed. The most basic German food such as sauerkraut was 'old, mushy and overly salty and just soggy' because it was overcooked and old and recooked .......as were the potatoes, weiner schnitzel, jaeger schnitzel etc etc. The best part of the meal was the diet coke...................and that's sad! The service was fine but we to to a restaurant to eat a decent meal but Heidelberg's decent service would not be enough to get us back. Sad because folks who eat here will think this is German food is and they will be left with a negative impression. Would not recommend or ever return,. Unfortunately, the best German Restaurantss are in Queens, ( Middle Village/Ridgewood)- e.g. ZUM STAMMTISCH.................

Fun and Good Food
A place that apparently hasn't changed in years and that's a good thing. Waitresses in peasant dresses and waiters in lederhosen - even our Latino waiter! Great food. The great potato salad was light without mayo and very light in vinegar. The red cabbage not so sour - the best I've had. A potato pancake of shredded potatoes was light, almost fluffy - deep fried to a crisp brown but without grease! The pot roast was flavorful and tender. The "beer garten" has no vegetation but it was delightful to be outside and in a quiet space in the middle of the city. It's at the back of the building next to the kitchen and a ventallation fan blows the cooking smells into this area -- good smells and not disturbing. We were there Saturday evening of a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend and it was maybe only half full or less. This was great for us but don't expect to be so lucky. I'm sure it is a bit more lively/noisy during busy times. Even those who arn't great fans of German food should be able to find something to their liking. I want to go back on my next visit to the City. It's easily accessable from the Lexington Avenue subway's 86th Street stop (both the local 6 and express 4 and 5 trains). Reservations only for parties of 6 or more.
