Sets the bar very high...
Hatsuhana is the one of the best Sushi restaurants in NYC, and probably the country. Bold statement I know, and I've been eating Sushi for about 20 years now. The fish is so fresh that the sushi and sashimi practically melts in your mouth. The chefs are artists and know their customers well. They stick to a traditional no frills approach and they can back it up by the quality of ingredients and the talented Japanese chefs behind the bar. They all speak Japanese and make you feel welcome. Now that they set the bar so high, other Sushi places seem like fast food. Thanks Hatsuhana ;)

Most excellent meal
My parents where in town for New Years and we all decided that a nice Japanese meal was in the cards. Sugiyama (the best Kaiseki in my book) was completely booked so after sorting thru MenuPages we decided to try Hatsuhana and we where glad that we did. First they where completely accommodating to our wanting to start the meal by ordering a bunch of small dishes to share between the four of us followed by soup and sushi. I was impressed that they brought the food in a considered order, (not just when it was ready) Building upon the dish before it. The Beef Tataki was the center piece of this section the beef supper fatty and tender, the spice just right. I have not had better Beef since I was in Kobe, Japan several years ago. The spicy shrimp tempura was good but nothing special, I would have liked more spice and a lighter batter. The Monk Fish liver was creamy, delicate and had just the right amount of ponzu. We finished off this selection with a nice selection of Japanese pickles. I had the Chefs Deluxe selection of Sashimi and they accommodated my request to substitute the Salmon: The Hamachi was fantastic, the Uni was nice and briny, the Tuna was just right but Ohh the Toro - I will have to say that the toro they had that night was the 3rd best toro I have ever had..... (1st was in Hawaii, 2nd Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo) All in all a delightful evening was had by all.

The night before New years
Twas the night before new years and all through the house, the wish was for sushi just for a douse. We rushed to our taxi and got through the door, with 10 minutes to closing and then raw fish was no more. Under their arm, they swept us quickly upstairs, showed us to our table and pulled out our chairs. On bonito, on Toro on king crab we cheered, and as fast as one blink in front of us it appeared. On eel roll on crab salad on Hamachi with glee, quick and kind service with care was all we could see. It was the Night before new years and all through Hatsuhana our bellies were no longer stirring, The only words to describe the taste is NIRVANA!

Best sushi I have had in NYC
The Japanese are known for stellar customer service, attention to detail, and excellent product delivery. This restaurant is staffed almost exclusively by native Japanese; their strong accents and mannerisms clearly convey they are expatriates. This alone indicated to me this was a quality establishment. And we hadn't even ordered. The appetizers we had were amazing. Ankimo (monkfish liver)... tasty, subtle flavors. Nasu Hasami Age: very good, and very creative. Agedashi tofu: very strong too. I order this at every Japanese restaurant, and Hatsuhana's version had a very light outside batter. Then, the sushi entrees. The sushi size wasn't huge, but nonetheless, I was full by night's end, and the fish quality was impressively fresh. One of us is a bona fide food critic... she has a far sharper palate than I do and she said this was very high-quality sushi. We also had some dessert - go for the sesame ice cream. This is NOT an inexpensive restaurant; the bill totaled almost $300 for 3 people. but for the occasional splurge, Hatsuhana excels.

Great food, nice service, and nice atmosphere
I took my wife and my mom here for restaurant week lunch (7/27), and we all loved it. The fish is very fresh, and the service was great, the staffs are very friendly. We will definitely go back.
