early bird catches the deal
While some other fabulous places for noodles and yakitori have opened on 9th street's little Japan, Hasaki has always been our favorite sushi in the neighborhood. Consistently fresh and appetizing, it continues to be a very good restaurant though the service does seem to have fallen on some transitional times. Come early for the Twilight Special and get the best deal on a full Japanese dinner with sushi or sashimi, tempura, and plenty else.

Get the miso soup
The kitchen and sushi bar are strong, producing traditional fare at a high level. My favorite dishes are the red miso soup, steak Japanese, and sashimi/sushi. If you sit at the bar and order the real omakase, served a piece at a time and priced by consumption, you'll be happy. (The fixed price omakase on the menu is served as a big plate of sushi and is not as good.) Service is prompt with an adequate staffing level. The room is comfortable with high light levels, soft jazz, bare light wood tables, and two doors to control air coming in from the street. I usually come late, between 10:30 and 11:15, and do not need to wait to be seated.

Spend your money elsewhere
Although the food was ok, staff was not accommodating to any dietary restrictions- they repeatedly put shrimp in my friends order when he specified an allergy and would not let him change more than one thing on a sushi platter with 16 pieces!!! Their pretentiousness was irrational and the food was DEFINITELY NOT worth it.

Never been disappointed
As a Japanese food lover in NYC, I visited many Japanese restaurants. Hands down, this is the best as far as food goes. Yes the service is a bit sketchy and the atmosphere not so special, but who cares when you are getting a fabulous meal at a fabulous price. The spicy tuna roll is fantastic and the garlic beef superb. Try it!

Not recommended
Ok, this place simply is not good at all. The salmon was rubbery. Our black cod appetizer had way too many bones in it. The rest of the sushi/sashimi was old and not at all fresh at all.

Fabulous little spot!
My boyfriend took me to Hasaki last night and I thought the sushi was absolutely mouth watering! He had heard about the place through one of his flatmates and has been there a couple of times. The spicy tuna rolls are excellent and I also recommend the salmon and the eel. Everything is just amazingly fresh and will melt in your mouth! What a find I told him!!

Tiny fun!
If you like the giant pieces of sushi and sashimi, this is not place for you. I have been eating at Hasaki for a bit and I always enjoy Omakase, chef's best selections! They are tiny pretty jewels for your eyes and melt in your mouth. It gets a little pricey, but it is just amazing.
