    Why all the hate?

I've been ordering from.going to Hamachi the last 8 years. I think the food is solid and delicious. I generally have it delivered, and the service is always prompt, my food is delcious and everything I ordered comes to me. The service at the restaurant isn't the greatest, but its by no means the worst. The servers are polite, and the presentation of the sushi is always very lovely. This is has been and remains my local sushi joint of choice.

    Almost DIY

Strange place. Walked in at 12:30 for a weekday lunch. No front staff. No waiters. Just the sushi guy and a woman taking phone orders. I will say there's a certain efficiency to not being able to order anything from the kitchen or the bar. This cannot end well.

    Bad Sushi

I remembered Hamachi from 10-15 years ago when it was packed at lunch and the sushi was great. Tried it again the other day. What a disappointment. First of all, should have gotten a clue when I saw we were the only ones there at lunch hour, while the Japanese restaurant across the street was full. Still, I figured we would be served quickly. Not so. Service was slow and lackadaiscal. Ordered a king crab roll, where little to no crab meat was in evidence. Sashimi by the piece was not good. My companions shrimp dish was likewise just edible. This place has not only gone downhill, it has reached the bottom. Save your money.

    Meh...

Just about average to below average in any possible way. Stick to the East Village joints for the best sushi.

Unique sushi and the best rock shrimp in town

I go to a lot of sushi joints but Hamachi is by far the best around. They have totally unique rolls, really fresh fish and by far the best rock shrimp appetizer I have ever tasted, better even than Nobu's which I never thought was possible. Last time I was there, I got one of their new specials, the Sea Breeze role, which was outrageously good. I also tried the miso baked lobster which was not only super, but a really well priced. Check it out the next time you are in the Gramercy area and make sure to try the sweet potato maki too. I always order it for the table and even veggie haters go crazy for it.
