Hale & Hearty Soups
Posted by Soup Lovers on 01/06/2005
We've only ordered delivery from Hale & Hearty twice before we realized there was one near enough to walk to. Although we had no problems with the orders (i.e. wrong soups/sammys or missing ingredients), it did take a rather significant amount of time to be delivered, even when ordered before 11:30am. Going there, however, is a much better experience. While it's rather chaotic from 12:15-1:30 ish, the service is pretty good and it never takes very long to get in and out, even when you spend time sampling soups. It is true that the portions are tiny and relatively expensive for what you get, but I am always extremely pleased with the food and, to me, that is worth it in the end.

But that's how I felt after my third attempt to get a good salad and soup lunch at Hale & Hearty without depleting my savings account. The soup is the best around, but the price for the size is unbelievable. The salad ingredients are the best around this area (34th st. west) but that's not saying much and they run out of the best ones early so you endure the early lunch crunch -- its's a real madhouse -- or do without. On my most recent trip, I came back to my office only to have to search and search for the smoked turkey and then discoverd they'd put in ham instead? The menus are confusing as all get out and one more thing -- if you order something soft in your salad like avocado or goat cheese (at $1.50 a pop) half of it gets left in the mixing tongs. So long Hale and Hearty!

While the delivery does take some time, the food is absolutely worth waiting for. If you can get to a location to order face-to-face you might have a hard time eating anything else for lunch. The variety and quality of soups that they offer is unrivaled in the city. Also, the salad bar is totally stocked with everything you could ever want. We also love their sandwhiches and combo deals! I could eat Hale and Hearty everyday!

The Hale and Hearty soup, when it finally arrives via delivery, is always heavenly. Every time we decide to order, we always attempt the best plan in order to have it delivered in a timely fashion, yet every time the orders are messed up, very late, and/or still MIA. Today, for instance, we called at 10:57AM for our lunch order for the reasonable soup and sandwich combos (we recommend sizing up to Medium on the soups). 11:45AM: Receive 2 bags of delivery and checked over receipt. 12:25PM: Opened bags for lunch, only soups were delivered. Call immediately and told they would send sammys over right away. 1PM: Still no delivery of sammys, call again. Told delivery brought to wrong address and will make sammys again and send over right away. 1:30PM: Call again to check on order. Told rest of order already left. 2:10PM: Call again to check on order. Spoke with Manager, who claimed we didn't order from them. I confirmed the phone number that I called, that is on the menu that is faxed to us every day, and that is printed on my receipt. Manager asked me what I would like her to do and I said to just please send me the rest of my order (we have only been waiting 3 hours) and do not charge us for it. She said ok, thanked me, and now it's 2:45pm and we just recevied our order. Early dinner, anyone? Look, perhaps the service is better in person. If given the opportunity and permission to eat lunch outside of our offices, we would probably still give Hale and Hearty a shot, but as we are stuck in the confines of our cubicles we just want the lunches that we ordered for delivery on time.

Never again will I have food delivered from Hale and Hearty Soups. I order a ceasar salad with all my fav toppings and a small chicken vegetable with Rice, and they bring me a Ceasar with bacon only, a large Wild Mushroom and oyster crackers (which are pretty good). I refuse to pay for it and the delivery guy gets all huffed up like he was going to cry. I call and tell them what happened and it turns out the person on the phone who takes delivery orders was having a bad day and messed up. Then they tell me they'll fix it tomorrow seeing how it was close to closing time... What kind of customer service was this?

The food is excellent but don't have them deliver. They seem to get careless. Once they put bacon in my salad when I didn't ask for it and once they forgot my sun-dried tomatoes. When I called to have them bring them, I was asked "um, do you want us to send them over?" as if I could actually eat a salad without sun-dried tomatoes. And I said yes, please send them. the delivery guy was nice though. It's also a bit pricey for the sizes of soups (the small is tiny and the medium is small and the large is medium).
