    Great Service, Good Value

I have no idea what the other reviewers are talking about when they are complaining about the service. I was at Haakon's last night and I received excellent service; I went in for drinks with a friend and asked to see the dinner menu. It was late, though, so the kitchen was closed. Everybody was very apologetic and they went completely out of their way to make sure that we still had a good time, bringing us a cheese and olive platter on the house. The prices are really some of the lowest around and the other times I went, while the kitchen was still open, the food was great.

Poor Dining Expereince in Moningside Heights

I went with friends to Haakon's Hall last night with high hopes and low expectations, and our experience was no good at all. The waitress was unfamiliar with the menu and when one of my dining companions ordered a sandwich she asked if he wanted fries or a salad...or maybe a soup? she couldn't remember what the options were or which or which you would need to pay extra for. She brought two rolls to the table for our party of three, realized there weren't enough and threw a still frozen one into the basket to compensate. When we tried to hail one member of the staff to ask where the side order of gravy we had requested was, he rudely told us to wait for another member of the waitstaff to come by because we were not his responsibility. When all of our food arrived it was luke warm and both the omelet and the meatloaf were disturbingly smooth. I feel like smooth should never be the first word that comes to mind when describing meat products, but in this case it was. Overall all the quality of our experience here was laughable. Our opinion of the establishment was probably most accurately reflected by our 12 cent tip.

    Service?? Where???

A friend of mine recommended we try this place based off of a review. Where shall I start?? the service was horrible I asked the server what beers she had on tap and she said 'tap? we dont have tap beer? we have tap water" We thought she was joking but it only became worse, she sent us the wrong food order not once but twice!!! Food was finally corrected not bad but definitely not worth the wait. After taking our food order she decided to sit at a table near by and conversate with a group of people I believe were her friends and completely disregarded us the rest of the night. The place is nice but the service and menu are a bit confusing. I guess it has yet to find its place yet.

classy establishment fitting a tight budget

Although at first I was a little apprehensive to try the place out as it looks pretty fancy and seemed out of my budget, I was shocked when I took a look at the menu and realized I could go out with my girlfriends and get a bottle of wine for only 15 bucks! Their TV dinners, which change everyday (Thanksgiving dinner on Thrusdays... so good) are only 13 or 14 dollars. Their beer selection is amazing and it's great that the area has a real nice bar to hit up late night. Despite this site's info. the Hall is open until 4 am... I think, and if you haven't tried it out, you definitely should give it a shot! Don't be discouraged by the Norwegian flair, most of their food is good ol home cooking and worth every penny.

    Defending Haakon's Hall

Someone wrote that the service was terrible at Haakon's Hall on May 13th, so I just wanted to point out that the restaurant is still brand new and only opening on May 11th. I went yesterday and had the steak sandwich and it was very good and a good value for your money. I would definitely go back.

    Staffers need to be trained.

Service was terrible. The waitress was probably on her first day and she did not know what she was doing. Probably a better place for the bar. The food was ok but, you get what you pay for. In general it was bland. The fish didn't seem fresh and it took an hour for 2 entrees and one salad. They brought the salad with the entrees which is really unorthodox. The atmosphere was nice but they really need to work on their service before I would think of going back there.
