    Pew Kaku

I am a big fan of yakiniku, (Japanese BBQ), I went to Gyu Kaku Several years ago and found it mediocre and somewhat overpriced. Recently my wife convinced me that is was worth a second try, so we went on a nice afternoon with babysitter in place! Yey! I think mediocre would be a very generous comment for the experience we had. They were serving "Kobe" beef , which was tough and lacking flavor, a large portion of the material I could not chew through was left on my plate. The meat was too thinly sliced to retain any moisture when grilled. The appetizers were passable, edamame was OK, the Vegetables for the grill were not at all good, and marginally fresh and tiny portion. Our Gyu Kaku salad came and the lettuce was black and slimy, it had certainly gone bad, and was interspersed throughout the salad. I understand that field greens are delicate and don't stand the test of time, so, I explained to the waiter quietly that, if they had a fresh bag of greens I would like another salad, but if not, I fully understand and would rather not have the salad. They returned with a slightly more fresh salad as a replacement (maybe even the same one picked over, hard to tell), and my wife felt obligated to accept it, which caused a bit of tension at our table. So, Gyu Kaku converted our potentially fun day into something less than wonderful.

I was there last night with my girlfriend. The food was good but service was totally unacceptable! They didn't bring the appetizer at first they brought the main courses on the table. Even though, we just reminded the waiter to bring the appetizer and the salad, it took just 20 munites to get the salad and appetizer. He didn't pay attention our table. We were even putting our wine by ourslef. We ordered our dessert, before the dessert was served, the waiter brought the check. Even though it was really expensive place, the service was the worst that I've ever had!

    Loyal Customer

I come here at least once or twice per week. The food is so fresh, and i know good food believe me. I am never let down my the food, there may not be 100 items on menu bu they all are delicious and worth it. Chicken Garlic Noodles!!!! Harami Skirt Steak!!! and all desserts are delicious, try to make reservation on weekends, happy hour drink and food specials well worth it.

I have been to other Japanese bbq restaurants, and this was the worst. We waited for over 30 minutes for our table. The food portions were very small, overpriced, and not much variety. They also played weird wedding music the whole night. I do not recommend going to this restaurant.

Great date place, a lil pricey but worth it!!

Obviously when you go on a date you are looking for a somewhat fun place that is classy with nice drinks but not too pricey. we got one of the side by side grilling booths, highly recommended; I had my girl next ot me which made it easy to talk and feed eat other etc.. Everything was really good, the kalbi soup and shrimp dumpling soups were great. I know they recommend 2 trays of meat per person, but we got the soups, 4 trays of meat total, two portions of steamed rice and two veggie plates, it was a little much. I would say order 3 trays of meat first then order another if you need, its uncooked so they bring it out fast. center cut filet- amazing basil chicken- really good sea bass-amazing miso harabi-not that amazing get some drafts and some sake. enjoy

    overpriced, mediocre quality

After an order for takeout, I arrived for pick up to the news that the phone order taker hadn't communicated the correct order and was informed in a dismissive manner that the rest of the order "wouldn't take long." After returning 10 minutes later, I learned that the $12 yellowtail sushi appetizer includes only 4 slices of not-fresh product, and that the $10 bibimbap order should more aptly be a $5 order of fried rice. Terrible value for this neighborhood and I will not return.

    My favorite restaurant!

This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants to visit in the city! I've been to this one and the Astor Place location countless times, and always have an amazing dining experience. The food is truly excellent. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I always get the Harami, but the filet, kobe, seabass, tuna are always good picks too. Aside from the delicious food, the whole experience is truly wonderful from the excellent service to the fun ambiance. It's always fun to go with a big group and try a bunch of things (and try lots of sake!), but also nice to go for an intimate dinner because the tables are semi-private. Gyu-kaku is a MUST try!! You won't be disappointed!
