Gusto Ristorante e Bar Americano

We reserved a table for two for Christmas Eve well in advance. We got there on time, but they weren't ready for us, so after keeping us waiting, they finally said they were giving us our "choice of tables." These turned out to be the two worst tables in the whole restaurant: one jammed into the servers' corner next to the computer and supplies and one right in front of the door so we could get blasts of 40-degree air every time someone opened the door, which we settled for since it wasn't as cramped. We didn't see our waiter for the first 30 minutes; the host had to get our drinks until the waiter finally came to take our food order. We never saw him again, and we had to chase down the host to bring a second round of drinks. When the food finally came, the portions and the quality were underwhelming. As soon as we finished our food, instead of asking if we wanted any coffee or dessert or ask how things were, the host came and literally threw the check down on our table, only to take it right back to add the second round of drinks that he forgot to charge us. After all that, they could barely find our coats in the coat check, judging by how many people and how long it took them. Overall, a wast of time and money, and judging by comments from tables around us, we weren't the only ones who had a bad experience.

I loved this restaurant. The food was amazing and the service excellent.

We had made a reservation for a Saturday evening for out of town guests. The hostess mixed up who we were when we came in the door, once corrected told us we would be seated shortly. They proceeded to seat 5 parties, including people who walked in 45 minutes after we did. It took an hour and 15 minutes to be seated from our reservation time, and they didn't even have the decency to offer us a drink, or acknowledge the fact that they were making us wait. A simple unsolicited apology would have made the situation more tolerable (we only received one when we said we were leaving). I've never been so poorly treated at a restaurant, and won't be returning.

My husband wanted to find a restaurant with a small side room for a birthday celebration and friends suggested Gusto. We went there in person and booked their room for our 9 guests for a Saturday night 4 weeks away. The manager came over and checked the availability and gave us the reservation. Great! That is until one week before we were supposed to have the party, a hostess from the restaurant called to say that oops! they already had a reservation for the room on that exact night. Too bad for us. Nothing they could do. Trying to find another restaurant in the Village with a separate room that was not booked on a Saturday night a week away was impossible. We eventually found a great place in Tribeca - not a private room but a restaurant that could comfortably accomodate us. Us and our friends have never come back.

If anyone cares, we had a 9:30 rservation for 4 people. For an hour we were told by the maitre d/owner/manager guy that our table is just about ready and they're setting up now. For our long wait, he was nice enough to buy us a round of drinks at the bar. The restaurant is dimly lit with a "cool" atmosphere. The location, however, might bring in a louder, younger crowd at times due to it's proximity to NYU. Risotto was good as was the lamb.
