Great Jones Cafe

Some of the best Gumbo I have ever had - it was stocked with shrimps, chicken, suasage, and basic goodness. The pecan pie, beers, and everything else was great. I would go back in a moment... In fact, I am Looking forward to it.

I'm from the deep south and have been searching desperately for anything in the city even vaguely resembling real southern food to no avail. Then I discovered Great Jones. Great little downhome place - not a lot of style but loads of substance. I loved the gumbo choke full of andouille sausage and shrimp and the pecan pie was a treat. I hear they have great drinks but I passed when I went. The room is tiny and they don't take reservations so don't go with a huge group (more than 4) as you could be waiting for a long time. Also, don't order anything "progressive" southern - portobello chili really doesn't belong on an otherwise authentic menu.
