Is That All There Is?
I stopped in here during a recent visit based on the reviews here. I have to say, I think their dogs are seriously over-rated. Not that they were bad, just nothing special. I don't know about other hot dog joints in NYC, but I've certainly had plenty better in other places. And, while it was my first experience with papaya juice, it seemed bland to me. The Recession Special was a good value though, and the guys working there are quick and efficient. Oh well, live and learn. For me, not worth a return trip.

great dogs
These hot dogs are great and a bargain. This is a great place for lunch when you are just wandering around New York.

Five Star food
The hot dogs are just a can“t miss in any gourmet life. It also can feed any hungry drunk buffalo. Ask for Sauerkraut only and Papaya Drink. Works the best for me, at least.

Best dogs in town!
Yea, the prices have gone up, but at $4.45 for two dogs and a drink, it's still pretty cheap. And the dogs are the best! Crisp and flavorful, with a just-the-right-size toasted bun. When it's warm grab it to go and take it across the street to Verdi Park. A perfect, cheap lunch.

$$$
This is a great place for hot dogs. But prices are getting carried away. I remember when 2 dogs and a drink were $1.00 now its $4.45 and not as crowded by the way. And politics and hot dogs dont mix Mr Grey

Shelter
I love this place and have been going here for the past 30 years. The hot dogs speak for themselves - wash down with a coconut drink is simply heaven. However, the place is dirty and be prepared to be acosted by a homeless person while you are trying to enjoy your food. Get it to go and eat around the corner it is well worth it. Keep in mind after a night of drinking this is the spot to hit on your way home.

An NYC original
I had heard about this place online, and then saw Regis Philbin saying how great it was. I took six family members here on our visit from Kansas. The dogs were really good, and so were the various juice drinks. We tried them all (coconut champagne, pina colada, banana, and, of course, papaya). And the real beauty: seven people fed for a grand total of $22!!!!! Get outta here! Oh yeah, later that day my mother-in-law bought a hot dog from one of the vendors in Central Parkshe said it didn't even come close to Gray's Papaya!
