Grandpa's Brick Oven Pizza
Posted by EJ on 08/22/2010
Called tonight to place a delivery order and was prepared to give the phone girl a piece of my mind if she said they don't deliver to my address. I can see from other reviews that they have delivered as far as the 180s, so not sure what the big deal is and why sometimes they won't. Pleased to report that the girl answering the phone was pleasant. This is honestly the best pizza in the neighborhood so I am glad to see that the new management has made some positive changes.

Ok so everything food wise I've had from this place I have liked a lot! Pizzas, pastas, desserts... I had one incident where the pizza crust was burnt black I called them and they sent me another one (of course they tried to explain that's the way brick oven pizzas are etc., but I had already had a half a dozen or more pizzas from them and none were ever black on the bottom - usually just right - and I knew better, however they did make good on it - so I continue to order from them). I also usually ask for fresh basil on my pizza and they forget it like over half the time, but they always give me a break on the next one or something to make up for it - I'd rather just have the basil on the pizza, but hey to me they've done a fine job overall - they usually even offer to bring me some basil - all in all I've felt like I've had good service - I have waited a while for a pizza - but the majority of the time I get them within a reasonable time. Also the girl who answers the phone, though she is fast or quick - she's probably getting like 100 calls a minute - and whenever I have had a problem like the burnt crust or basil missing etc. she has taken care of it and been really nice - maybe different girl than others on here are mentioning, but maybe not... I have no way of knowing... Now about the pizza I order I usually order a Margherita pizza with fresh basil and regular cheese - light on the cheese and extra sauce - and they get it right most of the time and when they do it taste fantastic - very fresh tasting crust, sauce and basil, and I like how they bring you the little cups of garlic, crushed red peppers, and parmesan cheese, their Apple pie is delicious too. It's probably the best pizza in the neighborhood, and can stand up to any pizza I've had in NYC. Oh one more thing it's a thin style crust which I like a lot. I'd recommend giving them a try, they also take credit/debit cards which is a nice change. Writing this has has made me hungry and I'm about to order from them tonight. If I experience anything different I'll be back.

First of all, after all of the negative reviews about the phone girl, I was very hesitant while I dialed the number to this pizza place. I prayed that I wasn't disconnected or yelled at. What a nice suprise! A very sweet man answered the phone, took my order, and my 12 inch pie with pepporoni, eggplant, and brocolli was here in less than 30 minutes. It was a Saturday at around 3pm so I didn't expect it to take long. I live in the 180's near Broadway and there was no issue delivering from Inwood to here. One slice was kind of burned but it was still good. My only complaint would be that they didn't put enough eggplant on the pie (probably skimping to save money). You should probably check this place out once in a while if you get bored ordering from Dominos or my favorite, Papa Johns.

in case anyone out there in I wood thinks that the 133% is an approval rating, let me clarify: today we ordered spicy chickenwings, the large portion. Previously, this order had cost $10 for 20 wings. Surprise! The large order of 20 has shrink to 12 wi gs while the price went up to 14 dollars. That is an increase of 133%. Mercifully, the staff had also gotten the order wrong and prepared a small portion, 6 wings for "only" $8 or 1.33 per wing. Not Worth It.

OK well So far i've only had their pizza, baked ziti & penne a la vodka and I was really impressed! I LOVE their thin crust brick oven pizza and add a lil xtra chz-- yummy! But i have to say I was disappointed when I ordered some chocolate cake and it was completely disappointing! First of all for $4 I should have gotten a nice BIG slice of cake-- OMG my slice looked like it was cut for a 2 yr old, it tasted old a bit flat it just wasn't a moist choc mousse cake.. I threw all of it out! I will stick to the dishes I know. Yes the phone girl is nasty but their delivery guys are always pleasant thank god!! :)

I've stopped ordering from Grandpa's, which is too bad because, while their delivery is slow (living up to their name?), they offer whole-wheat-crust pizza and artichoke hearts as a topping choice, which thus far is the only establishment in WaHI that I know offers. The reason I've stopped ordering is primarily the phone woman that others have commented on, but also the fact of the aforementioned slowness which results in cold pizza once it finally arrives.

I like Grandpas food a lot, but yes, horrific service. We must all be getting the same girl on the phone. She is totally rude. I really don't understand how they still have her working there. She's so unpleasant, that I pretty much have to build myself up to get the desire to call them. That's pretty bad. They haven't messed up my order for awhile, but the mistakes used to happen rather often.
