As the title states, this is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the East Village. Some dishes are a little too heavy on the starch, but the Gui Zhou chicken is just to die for. Unfortunately, all to often, I get the impression that the staff probably wishes that I'd die rather than patronize their restaurant. I swear I am not one of those people who changes her mind 18 times mid-order or asks for endless substitutions! I don't know what it is, but every server or phone order taker I've spoken with has just acted so put upon and, jeez, how I dare bother them to place an order. Not cool, Grand Sichuan! You're lucky that there is so little decent Chinese in the immediate area.

This location of Grand Sichuan has interesting "Authentic Style Vegetables," great for vegetarians or those wanting to eat lots of vegetables in addition to a main course. I liked both the Spicy Fish Soup and the Gui Zhou Chicken, both a bit oily for my taste, but very good. We also ordered the Pumpkin with Ginger and Pea Shoots. Both were delicious! We started with appetizers of Cool Cucumber in Ginger and another of Tofu with Ginger Sauce, again, both delicious.

Food is ok (soup was good; main dishes sucked). What was even worse was their customer service. My friend and I didn't finish most of the food, because they were way too salty and oily. We asked them to pack our leftover to go. And that's when disaster struck! We came home to find all the food spoiled because they put the leftover (with a lot of sauce) in those cheap takeout paper boxes. The oil soaked through the paper box, leaked out of the cheap plastic bag, and almost ruined my favorite tote bag. When I called the manager to complain about it, he hung up on me when I was still talking and he was not even apologetic at all. If the food is bad, the least they could do is be nice. But in this restaurant, you will find nothing but unappetizing food (unless you like your food really salty and oily)

I've tried several chinese delivery places in the area and so far this is definitely the best. It's a little on the pricey side, but anytime I try one of the cheaper places I realize Grand Sichuan is definitely worth the extra couple of dollars. The soup dumplings in particular are really excellent.

We go there quite often and order different stuff from the menu. So far there's only been a couple of dishes that we didn't like -- mostly the veggie dishes.

I was such a fan of this place until I decided to have a delivery this week. I was so DISAPPOINTED with what I received. I'd ordered General Tso's Chicken which is usually white chicken chunks in a spicy sauce with broccoli on the side. The reason I'm describing it is because what I received was white chicken chunks in a bland sauce with cabbage, baby carrots, corn and chili peppers mixed in. I immediately called them to complain about receiving the wrong dish. The woman on the phone had the audacity to tell me that I had received General Tso's Chicken. She went on to explain that their takeout food is different than their restaurant food and that most customers prefer what I'd just received with the mixed vegetables instead of broccoli. I've never heard of any restaurant doing this and told her she'd just lost a customer. If she'd admitted to having sent me the wrong dish, I'd have understood, but to argue with me about it was just poor customer service. Good thing about living in NY is the plethora of Chinese restaurants to choose from.

Just went to Grand Sichuan St. Marks recently, having not been since I moved out of the Gramercy area. I was caught off guard by the higher prices but I figured the restaurant just had gotten popular (who raises prices in a recession, though?). However, I was most disappointed by the food. Never had I had food that oily at Grand Sichuan. It seemed as if there was more oil than meat. Higher prices for worse food. Grand Sichuan, it was a pleasure knowing but now I must go...
