The best real Chinese food outside of Chinatown
And I should know because I'm Chinese. If you want AUTHENTIC Chinese cuisine, not the watered-down version, this is your spot! I can only find such quality in Chinatown, but I'm glad there's one in Murray Hill -- and I literally mean, ONE, in this price range, at least. The menu entrees include such Chinese delicacies as 5-spice beef, sliced fish with sour cabbage soup, bitter melon, sauteed pea shoots.... Now that's what I call Chinese food! I've sampled quite a bit of Chinese restaurants, and believe me, even the expensive ones may not get quite this good in quality and variety. The "Chinatown" prices don't hurt either! I had expected it to be a bit more expensive considering the excellent dishes they offer, but prices are unbelievably reasonable!! As for service, the staff are not effusive and don't ask you every 5 minutes whether everything is okay, but personally, I prefer waiters to be alert but not intrusive. At Grand Sichuan, they leave you to enjoy your conversation with friends without interruption but are at your table as soon as you lift your head up from your food and look at them. Further, the food comes out of the kitchen quickly which is great when I'm in a hurry. One time, I was able to have lunch within 10 minutes and be on my way. We need more Chinese restaurants like Grand Sichuan in areas other than Chinatown, but very grateful to have Grand Sichuan! Keep up the good work!

Not recommended
Given the competition in the restaurant industry, one would hope that there would be a greater emphasis on not only food quality but also the manners of the people employed. Rude service and average Chinese dishes with above average pricing, even for their lunch specials.

Small portions, large price
I ordered the chicken chow fun lunch special expecting a decent size portion like many of the other chinese places in the city. Instead, I received a very small container. The small soup that comes with the meal is bigger. Also because I got noodles it didnt come with rice. $9.45 for an eggroll, small soup, and what they call a lunch special portion. NOT worth the money at all when so many other places offer good food at a lower cost.

BYOB Hot Pot
I lived in China for a year and the ting I miss the most is the food. Grand Sichuan is run like a Chinese, Chinese restaurant, not an American Chinese restaurant. I love it, I've ordered all of my favorites here and have rarely been disappointed. The Hot Pot is awesome and they are kind enough to let us bring out own Bai Jiu. The staff is kind and they even humor me when I butcher my Mandarin. Overall, Not a place to go for American Chinese dishes but a great place to go if you want a good taste of authentic chinese food without going to Chinatown or Flushing.

Unfortunate takeout policy
Just wanted to say that I've gone from ordering from here at least once a week to never, after they changed their takeout policy and instituted a minimum order, which pretty much requires that you order for multiple people. Maybe it wasn't profitable for them to deliver individual lunches, but it's a pity.

Disappointed
I ordered in from this place. The food came fast but man was it not worth it. The eggdrop was inedible, the general tsao's was mushy and there were 5 pieces. The Lomein was ok at best. They gave me 2 packets of soy sauce for 5 dishes. I have been in NY for 26 years and this was some of the worst chinese food I have ever had.

Best Chinese Takeout. Period.
I had dined at the Grand Sichuan on St. Marks a few times before I decided to order from this one. The takeout food is incredible. Real Chinese people concur!! The variety of vegetables, the spicy dishes like mapo tofu, the noodles... it's all super flavorful and indistinguishable from what you would get from a good restaurant in China. The delivery is fast. The woman on the phone is curt... but somehow that adds to the mystique of the place. It's all business, and these people are in the business of making killer Chinese food. I don't mind paying 2X over other, closer places because the quality is just that much better. When I tell my girlfriend that we're going to order from the "good Chinese place", it puts a big smile on her face.
