so its good, not amazing, but for someone who has looked for good chinese takeout on the upper west for 2 years this is as good as it gets. my biggest criteria is not to have sketchy (i.e., slimy) chicken and this place doesnt which is huge!

I have found some dishes to be better than others, but overall a solid UWS chinese restaurant.

We ere anxious to try this restaurant because we like spicy, flavorful food. As soon as the Hot & Sour soup arrived with no pork, no mushrooms, no pickles......just liquid with some egg white and tofu...we knew there was a problem. Lamb with Ginger, unbearably salty and greasy as was Pork and Squid Family Style. Here, family style means no pork, no squid, no care in preparation, just lots of hot pepper. Do yourself a favor, eat elsewhere.

Shun Lee it is not but this is better than most usual Chinese spots. The ingredients, especially the spices are so fresh. Spicy food here is spicy. They use fresh peppercorns which one needs to get used to. The food is very good.

Really wanted to love this place. Have tried it 6 or 7 times the past several months and have been completely let down each time. These dishes lack the complexity and depth of flavor I love in authentic Sichuan cooking. Having eaten the real thing in China, have also found great spots in NYC for this type of food. Sadly this is not one of them. Not helping their case of a neighborhood dining gem is their hurried, disinterested, clumsy, extremely poor service. I've spent my last dollar at this place. No more.

For the 20 years I have lived on the UWS, I have been a loyal client of Hunan Balcony for take-out/delivery. Their food was "not terrible," and the freebies they offered were a plus. But a disastrous experience last time (a sizeable ball of mud in my spinach) encouraged me to go afield. My delivered meal from Grand Sichuan made me wonder why I fooled around with "not terrible" all these years. Everything I ordered was superb, especially the squid and pork home style, which had a fabulous smoky flavor. The delivery was also very fast: only 15 minutes. The only downsides to ordering from Grand Sichuan involve price: the menu is not cheap, certainly by Hunan Balcony standards, and they charge a $5 to deliver to W. 94th, which I find a little strange. But all in all, the quality of the food makes it well worth the price. Recommended.

Restaurant is very clean. Servers are very attentive. Most importantly, the food is great and authentic !
