My husband and I dine out regularly, and decided to try Gente after viewing the menu online. As the prices appeared to be in the middle to upper range for an italian restaurant, we anticipated an equivalent dining experience. When we arrived we were quickly seated. The decor and atmosphere was to our liking, which we were able to determine after sitting there waiting for someone to acknowledge our existence. We choose our cocktails from the limited drink menu, decided which entrees looked appetizing, chatted about the day, and waited. Finally, a boring, uninterested waiter came and we gave him our order. He eventually brought us our cocktails, which were wet. Fortunately we had them, because we had to ask for bread and water seemingly putting out the staff. Our meals came plopped on dull white plates, even my soup. I ordered Minestrone, soon realizing why the waiter corrected my pronunciation of the word. It was a completely different soup! A sad clear broth with indiscernable vegetables fresh from the can, easily finished in just a few spoonfuls. My husband had lasagna, which was cooked well, likely in a microwave. It was adorned with an orange sauce of sorts, possibly Gente's only imaginative take on food. Our experience was brightened when we saw are waiter for only the third time when he brought our check. Ladies and gentlemen, only in NYC could a subpar restaurant with poor service and mediocre food at inflated prices survive amongst the countless other choices. I can only tell you we'll never be back to Gente.

It's hard to know where to begin. After having to ASK for water and bread, the service did not get any better. The "risotto" was just rice with one shrimp. The "veal milanese" was a breaded piece of shoe leather. Nobody seemed to care. Do yourself a favor - go to your local pizzeria where you can get a decent plate of food.

I recently visited Gente with my boss and co-worker (08/26/10). We arrived to this "authentic" Italian restaurant at approximately 5:30pm to be welcomed with rap music blaring out of their sound system. I should have known at this point to turn around and run. To start, my boss orderd a small ceasar salad and I ordered a small house salad. We received our main entrees prior to our salads. I questioned this and the waiter quickly returned with 2 small caesar salads. When questioned, I was rudley told that caesar "is" their house salad. HHHMM?? My veal piccata was tough and no vegetables and potatoes accompanied the meal as stated in the menu. My waiter was rude and slow. Definitely avoid this restaurant.

We decided to visit this restaurant weeks after passing by this posh joint practically every day. A patron was smoking outside when we peeked in, and she interjected unabashedly: "Go in, the food's excellent!" When we finally made it there (for a late lunch) we were greeted by two rather tired-looking servers. But over the course of our meal, we learnt how the experts fold table napkins in record time. :) The decor was cute, and you should come here if you're a Sophia Loren or Marilyn Monroe fan. :D The ingredients were incredibly fresh and the mix of taste was a luxury on the palate. We ordered Tagliolini Con Gamberi E Asparagi (thin egg noodles with shrimp and asparagus), Risotto Con Calamari E Asparagi (risotto with squid and asparagus) and a truffle dessert. Lunch prices are great value for the quality of food you get.

We recently had a rehearsal dinner for about 50 people at Gente. It was a wonderful experience. Jay and his staff were very accommodating and helpful in planning the dinner. The food was wonderful and Jay created a special artichoke appetizer that was superb. Even though the party ran beyond the expected time, the staff was kind and helpful until everyone had left. This is a terrific restaurant!

Tried it 'cause it is close to Grand Central and when I meet friends it's a good central ground for all of us, location-wise. Everything was fine, food average Italian, tasty but nothing above average.

I found Gente about a year ago when i was trying to break up the mundaneness of mid town lunch. I have eaten there many times and the food and service is always great. The specials are always wonderful and their ingredients are obviously fresh. I am writing this review though based on their delivery which i think is fabulous, the portion sized is large and the food always come hot and the order complete (one would think this should be expected from a restaurant but after 7 years of ordering in lunches i have realized that NOTHING can be expected). I have chosen today to write the review because i received exceptional service from the hostess when asking for a recommendation (she chose the rissoto with shrimp and asparagus which everyone in my office had to sample after the delicious aroma filled the space and had them all salivating.) the salads are also great- my favorite being the shrimp avocado and hearts of palm. for 6 bucks its more then well worth it. lots and lost of fresh shrimp and avocado. really great place if u want good Italian in mid town.
