After enjoying what was a rather decent dinner at gennaro, i left the place with a sour after taste. i don't believe that a restaurant that gives its waiters the authority to impolitely and abruptly demand that diners vacate table immediately after closing the bill has anything to be proud of no matter how decent the food may be. a good restaurant must ensure that diners feel happy and comfortable about enjoying their meals and parting with money at a particular establishment. this is a restaurant best enjoyed at home via it's take-out service, that way you needn't worry about getting kicked out when your plate's over....

Gennaro's is a winner! The food has been consistently wonderful in the 10 years we've been going. Crowded, yes; cramped, sometimes; noisy, yes! But that's because the food is exemplary! Service- with Michael or Andrew is great ---otherwise, it's OK. But the quality and taste of the food is superb and overrides the service and ambience. The gnocchi is the best I've ever had, anywhere! Order from the Specials because they really are -very Italian and creative as well. Gennaro is very obliging when a guest asks for something "without cheese" or "light on the garlic" or "just a touch of cream". It's all cooked to order -so it's worth the wait. The wine list is fairly priced and quite diverse -something for everyone from novice to afficianado. We see "regulars" each time we go -Gennaro's gets a big repeat business from people who know food ---celebrities, critics and foodies. The pastas are great --but so are the lamb chops and the duck --and fish as well. Vegetarians can always find good choice, too. Don't be dissuaded by the naysayers --Gennaro must be doing something right...and deserves a very high rating!

One of my favorite Italian places in the city. Everything is good. CASH ONLY - NO RESERVATIONS. Great - great food. Don't even read the menu - just order off of the specials. They have 1 really good waiter - the rest are so-so. If you don't get the good one - don't expect good service. It really won't matter though - the food makes it worth it.

We ate here when it was half the size. Then the food was pretty good but we were crammed in like sardines and the experience was uncomfortable. When we tried Gennaro's again last night, we were more cramped than before with waiters and customers bumping into us every few minutes, the din prevented any conversation and we were hurried through each course. The food which was OK but expensive became irrelevant and I was pleased to get out.

This is my second visit to Gennaro. Loved it both times and I plan on going back soon and often. We had friends visiting and they were impressed. The beef carpaccio was probably the best I have ever tasted.

We live around the corner from Gennaro and could always count on it for reasonably priced and tasty, if not inventive, Italian food. In the last three months, we've gone twice, and the wheels seem to be coming off. Service was rushed, indifferent, and sloppy (no water, poor bread etc.) and they have stopped garnishing the plates. A small but telling detail. Frankly, the flavors seemed muddy. And their habit of having more specials than items on the printed menu is just silly. And beware the prices of the specials! ...as someone who has eaten there dozens of times (but no longer), my advice is to stay away. Why stand in line for lousy service and mediocre food?

Food is over-rated at best - every item on the menu is a disingenious version of the of the true Italian dish. Believe me, there's no better critic than a first generation Italiano.....Ciao
