Used to Be Better
Alas, Gennaro has declined to serving pleasant but undistinguished food (altho the carpaccio was excellent). Service was friendly but slow, and the waiter complained to us afterward about a 15% tip (he wanted us to double the tax, which would have made a difference of $3).

Disappointed
We were a party of 6. Seated in back near work area. We were cramped and kept getting "bumped" as waiters walked by our table. After reading the reviews we hoped food would be worth the discomfort. We all had variety of food. Ravioli special, veal special, 2 pasta dishes, 2 chicken dishes. Not one of us was impressed. In addition to mediocre food, we were being rushed after our meal by waiter, even though there was no one waiting to be seated! Will never go back.

Poor Experience
The food is generally great here, but tonight we were treated poorly by waiter. Luckily the head waiter was very kind to us as he usually is, but the incident has left us feeling like we don't want to go back.

Consistent, delicious, NOT pretentious
This is italian/ mediterranean food with a twist! lemon zest, REAL salt cured capers, sardines boned in house, pillowy tiramisu, juicy lamb rack...... for over 15 years, this place continues to shine. But one nver sees the elusive Gennaro! yes, still cash....but who cares. It's well worth the reasonably priced fare.

You can't eat atmosphere.
Gennaro is nothing to write home about. And you can count on them making a lot of honest mistakes. A member of my party asked for a Caesar salad and the server said he would bring something close. What he got was an minced anchovy salad with (celery?) instead of greens. The sauces are okay at best. The orecchiette was incredibly dull; perhaps it would be alright as a side dish, but as a main course it failed miserably. The bill left a bad taste in my mouth as well, considering what we got. And cash only? That’s convenient… for them! I’m used to good food at moderate prices. I’m sure there are good upper west side restaurants but this isn’t it.

good food, poor delivery
good food here, but don't order delivery, i placed a small order, 45 minutes later no food, i call, they said they're sending it over, 20 minutes later no food, i call again, they said they're sending a guy soon. i said no you're not, cancelled the order. eat at the restaurant but DON"T order for delivery.

Amazing.
If you want a wonderful dining experience with amazing food, look no further. This place is great for all types of dinners from a casual, relaxing meal to an anniversary, Gennaro delivers. And don't bother memorizing the menu. They always have a long list of amazing specials.
