Our favorite neighborhood spot
This is our favorite place in the neighborhood. The food is always great, it is very reasonable, and the staff is lovely. Cash only is hardly a big deal in a world with ATMs on every corner.

Very good all around
I agree that the "specials" are not so special. Otherwise food is very good and very good value. Wish the waiters spoke more clearly. Will definitely keep going back.

Really love this place in spite of itself
I've lived here for 30 years, have cooked professionally and have been to Gennaro many times, most recently last night-- and the food was perfect as always. Fava bean salad with radishes, pecorino, walnuts and arugula, followed by crispy-juicy lemon-roasted game hen with olive & sundried tomatoe mince, all over mash potatoes and broccoli rabe. Two of us, salads & entrees with good bottle of white--$75 Their waiters and the cash-only policy make me crazy, but the cooking beats the over-rated grub at Babbo and Esca hands down every time. Every time.

Best restaurant on the UWS
I can't believe anyone would have anything bad to say about this place. I've been going here for about 3 years and it's one of my favorite restaurants in the whole city, definitely on the UWS. A tip: don't order the specials, they are overpriced. Stick with the menu and when in doubt get the lamb shank. You can thank me later.

Delicious and Sit at the Bar
Just back from a fantastic meal here where we sat at the bar. The service was attentive, knowledgeable and generous. The food was fantastic. We had kale salad, fava bean salad, branzino and lamb chops with a great bottle of red. It was all so delicious and because we didn't sit at a table we had lots of room, a nice view and a quiet place to talk. Highly recommend.

Tacky rip-off
The decor is "store-front meets Italian TGI Fridays" ugly and tacky. The waiter's order screen is smack in the middle of the dining room making the whole experience feel like a dive-thru. The waiter listed about a dozen specials (or more) very quickly with no mention of prices. There is no wine-by-the-glass menu. When I asked for a glass of red wine, I was brought what I assumed was house wine. It was pleasant enough and I ordered another. I later discovered that each glass was $17!!!! That is more than the price of the average entree. I complained to the manager and he offered me another drink. Hardly the point. I felt intentionally mislead and ripped off.
