Disgusting service. Also the lighting is terrible. On the other hand the food is excellent. They have a very good selection of wine, but too bad you cannot enjoy it because the servers rush you out. Too bad, will never go back. Change the waitstaff!

The food here is professional and delicious. It is the best Italian restaurant on the UWS. The specials are plentiful and it's hard to go wrong. They also welcome ordering off-menu if you like something that isn't on the menu. The service is courteous and very knowledgeable. The $20 per person minimum isn't so terrible - one appetizer, two mains and a couple of sodas will get you there. Overall, amazing restaurant - HIGHLY recommended.

Gennaro's is the best Italian food in the area (W90-100), but they are cash only. This is annoying when you order in and don't have much cash on you, or when you go there, there are no ATMs right nearby except at some sketchy delis. The tiny restaurant can get crowded. They also do not post their specials but have waiters with thick accents speed through them. That said, it is my FAVORITE Italian in the area, and TOTALLY WORTH some inconveniences. They always have tons of terrific specials, wonderful standards, and great service. The atmosphere is terrific. You can go there for a romantic date, or with the family or just because you don't want to cook. It's warm and down-to-earth, but still special. They always have new art on the walls and great smells coming from the kitchen. It is one of the few Italian restaurants like this on the UWS, and in this immediate area the ONLY good Italian, in my opinion. It is also a great value for the money- which is why there are long lines on weekend evenings. The good COMPLETELY outweighs the bad here. Also- try the salads, the appetizers, and the ravoli. Heaven.

i heard good things about this restaurant,and decided to try it. we couldn't understand the waiter's heavy accent, so we both ordered the salad on special and were disappointed. my salmon was good but a very small piece. my wife got a chicken dish that was good. the cash only thing is a hassle, and the service was not very good. with all the great italian restaurants in nyc, this will be a one time only visit.

I have to agree with the many negative reviews of this place. After moving to the UWS, I tried this restaurant on a recommendation from a friend. The service was very poor, they don't take credit cards, and they require a minimum order amount per person. Portions were very small, and the quality of the food was mediocre at best. Little flavor, little innovation, little anything except attitude and cash-only price. They also hurry you out the door after you're finished. How ridiculous. I was not impressed and won't be going back with so many other great Italian places in NYC.

We are big fans of the food but sometimes wish the space was a bit more generous. Wait staff is professional and clearly knowledgeable about the dishes. We have dined here many times and we are always pleased.

We almost didn't go to Gennaro because of the many negative reviews of the service. I'm glad we went anyway. We came with our 11-month old and they put us in a great spot with room for the high chair. The service was very good and the food delicious- by far the best we've had in this price range. We'll be going back often.
