My fiance and I chose to go to this restaurant for our anniversary. We were excited to try it based on the many positive reviews on this site. However, when we walked into the restaurant we were disappointed to find that it looked like someone's basement. There's a difference between tacky and old and "old-school" and this place definitely embodies the former. The food was sub-par, particularly for the prices. We knew there weren't too many young diners (we're in our late 20s) but everyone there was a good 40 years older than us on a Friday night. Not to mention an elderly couple fighting rather loudly a few tables over. All in all, nothing redeeming about this place, just a huge disappointment.

I hate the expression "It is what it is," but that certainly applies to Gene's. Is the food here the best Italian in New York? No. Is the cooking innovative? Is the decor hip? No way. If anyone wanted to film a movie that took place in the 1940s, they could do it here without changing the decor OR the menu. But that's what makes this place so addictive. The food is good, it's reliable, and that's why I keep going back. They have dishes like Veal Milanese with spaghetti on the side: you cannot get that everywhere. Sometimes the cooking is merely good; other nights you are pleasantly surprised because it's REALLY good. People love going to Gene's and there's a reason. I hope this place is still around in another 60 years.

Gene's is a classic, I have been going there since I was a kid and the food, the atmosphere and the service are all top notch. What I really enjoy about this place is that even when it gets crowded during the dinner rush it is not noisey at all. The food is delicious and the service is impeccable. One of my favorite places in the city hands down. P.S. They give you anisette on the side when you order an espresso at no extra charge. Gotta love it.

I have eaten there many times , it began when we lived on 5th and 12th many years ago. I have never had a bad meal nor was the service less than impeccable . It is like dining with family. Same waiters for years , same chef for over 26 years !!! Great Martinis . Decor is early Italian Rocco but who cares . Best Filet with mushrooms in town . It puts the big guys to shame. Enjoy

I have to admit that I am a very picky person when it comes to eating at restaurants, being that I worked in fine dining for ten years. Gene's is the best Italian food I've eaten in Manhattan. From apitizer to dessert, everything was amazing. The chicken parm could be cut with your fork and the zuppa di pesce was to die for. I will definitly go back sometime very soon, and I would HIGHLY recomend it to anyone looking for authentic Italian cuisine.

Been there a dozen times over the last year. Prices are very reasonable and they have a prix fix menu which is even better. Always excellent service and atmosphere. Tucked down under the street its a great little place and the food is always very good. Get to 11th street and check it out.

I'm stunned. Why am I stunned? Because I, Ernest M. Skinner, the curmudgeon of restaurant reviews, can find NOTHING to complain about, and EVERYTHING to say in praise of this restaurant. I just keep going back because the food is perfect, the service is great, the prices are rational, and the experience is ALWAYS gratifying. Another great feature: It's VERY QUIET. I detest noisy restaurants. But here, these intelligent folks have put acoustical tiling on the ceiling, and do NOT play music over speakers, so you don't have to shout to have an adult conversation. If only more restaurants were as wonderful as Gene's. Except then I'd have nothing to whine about...
