Tucked away underground on 11th Street, with the KL5 phone number on the window showing you exactly how long this place has been around, Gene's unfailingly provides well-prepared Italian food at reasonable prices. Been there three times, and my girlfriend and I were pleased with how fresh the ingredients were and the level of care that went into each dish we had. Our entrees, be it fish, pasta or meat were always good yet not excellent. The prix fixe menu offers a fine range of entrees, and portion sizes are generous. In keeping with the old-fashioned vibe of the restaurant, the service is unobtrusive, attentive and pitch-perfect. All and all, Gene's is a solid, unpretentious place to enjoy a good Italian meal and soak in the abundant old-school charm.

Very low-key, comfortable, yummy food, warm service -- nothing chic or trendy about it, yes, an older crowd, perhaps some tired decor, so don't go there for the scene, unless you like to be reminded of old time Bronx Italian places... Caesar salad dressing seems to have real anchovy paste... great bread... all the entrees were great.

My dear friends introduced me to this lovely place. From the minute I walked in I was impressed. Skipping the fancy decor they instead focused on a laid back atmosphere, cleanliness, service and the food. I'm hooked and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others. Without a doubt I will be going back very soon.

When I went back on the second night not only did they remember me, they also treated me like family. This place is a gem. The food is delicious. The best fetticini alfredo I've ever had. Classic.

Great classic old-fashioned Italian restaurant food, superb un-rushed un-pretentious service, generous cocktails, lovely conversations, reasonable prices, all-in-all the best local place around! The crowd might be older, but that's because they're wiser too!

My fiance and I chose to go to this restaurant for our anniversary. We were excited to try it based on the many positive reviews on this site. However, when we walked into the restaurant we were disappointed to find that it looked like someone's basement. There's a difference between tacky and old and "old-school" and this place definitely embodies the former. The food was sub-par, particularly for the prices. We knew there weren't too many young diners (we're in our late 20s) but everyone there was a good 40 years older than us on a Friday night. Not to mention an elderly couple fighting rather loudly a few tables over. All in all, nothing redeeming about this place, just a huge disappointment.
