One of my favorites
Have been coming here for 20+ years after a village-born friend recommended it. My husband's Italian and loves their veal. I don't eat meat, but recommend all of the fish dishes, pastas, and desserts: poached pear with ice cream is my fav. Have celebrated many birthdays, father's days, and other holidays.

Just what I was looking for
Having recently moved to the west village, I haven't found my favorite spots yet. This one just topped the list! I was craving some Italian and menupages told me Gene's was just down the street. I strolled over and spent the next 80 minutes enjoying the food and atmosphere, completely unrushed. My server suggested one of the daily specials, veal with mushrooms, a side of spaghetti, and a glass of red wine to complement it. For starters, he suggested the cesar salad and mentioned the dressing was homemade. I got it all. And so glad I did. Everything was excellent! I probably shouldn't have, but I got dessert too....some vanilla ice cream on wafer/sponge cake things and drizzled with chocolate syrup. I know my ice cream and chocolate and this stuff was legit! Absolutely what I was looking for tonight. I will undoubtedly be back.

People who know "Old School" are usually old enough to know what "Old School" actually is.
Yes , this place is "old school". It's demonstrated by the quality of the food it serves and service it gives throughout its history. Never been disappointed here by either...my review is based on going there about once or twice a month for 8 years.

Classic & reliable
Gene's is as reliable as it gets. Their meat and fish dishes are fantastic; some of the best veal parm and picatta in the city! Their prices are very reasonable considering you get a large choice of side and very good bread/crudité. Only issue as others mention is it's not a youthful environment but the food MORE than makes up for it!

Interesting little places
I've been going to Genes for a few years and the food is great, absolutely amazing Italian food but I only have one problem with it. The atmosphere is a little depressing, it's really not a restaurant for young people, but it's worth it for the food.

simply the best place to eat in the city.
I love Gene's. I was introduced to this restaurant 16 years ago by an old village resident and since then i've made it my own. From the decor, the staff, the patrons and it's excellent food, this place just wispers in your heart and soul, welcome. I've brought family and friends to my favourite restaurant and they all have enjoyed the experience. my suggestion... seek it out and enjoy what it has to offer!

Bartender Switched to Cheap Brand
Started the meal by ordering Tanqueray martini's for myself & guest. It's been my cocktail of choice for 40 years, and I know its distinctive taste intimately. The waiter understood my order absolutely but brought to us a cheap substitute. I reported this to him and he took the drinks away. He returned later say I should verify. I noted a FAINT taste of Tanqueray and decided not to embarrass my companion any further by sending this second delivery back. I did tell the waiter, though, that I was definitely NOT pleased. Obviously, the bartender (on the manager's orders?) had compounded the insult by sprinkling a few drops of Tanqueray on top of the original, cheaper drink in hopes I'd be fooled by the faint aroma of the real thing. I felt as though he'd treated me like a no-nothing boob. The "taste" left in my mouth was not that of Tanqueray!
