Not recommended
We got delivery and our experience was disappointing. The fish was not fresh, the spring rolls tasted like they were pulled from the trash, and the eggplant tasted like nothing but dirty oil. The food is inedible and left my husband and I without dinner and 50$ less in my pocket.

best in this area
For visitors to Brooklyn Museum or the Gardens this is a good place

actually, it's all good
This place is true japanese food, emphasizing variety of flavor, ingredients, format, and a warm social atmosphere. The negative reviews here are mostly the result of poor use of this quality restaurant. The everyday sushi as found all over nyc serves a different purpose--more like as the burrito of Asia. Eat at Gen when you have time to sit there and enjoy. DONT order it as take out and don't just get sushi. You won't be sorry.

What a rip-off
Dinner for two: $55! We ordered from this place last night. It took nearly an hour to get here. And the food (we got Chicken Teriyakki) was really lame. The chicken was dry and had almost no flavor at all- it came with dry shredded cabbage and strange potato salad. Though I have to say the soba noodles were alright. I will never order from this place again- don't waste your money

Excellent neighborhood spot
I've eaten at Gen regularly and am always satisfied. Their nigiri/sushi is among the best I've had, and they've got great specials based off of what is in season (I recently had monkfish liver pate that got me feeling all transcendent). Also, their homestyle japanese selection is really good (ochazuke FTW)...you'd be hard pressed to find better homestyle japanese cooking at a restaurant in Brooklyn. I think their rolls menu could be improved or refreshed, or just simply shortened. Also, I find it best to just chat up the server and see what is freshest before I order, but this is good practice at any sushi restaurant, no? The service is always great, the place has a lot of style and you can tell the owners have invested a lot of energy into making it into a unique spot. The patio is REALLY NICE, get out there if you can.
