Been here about 3 or 4 times now and this is what I have had; artichoke salad (to die for), filet (cooked to perfection), pizza is great, lamb chops were incredible. Though I will admit that the place can be a little too croweded for my likeing- the atmosphere is one of a kind and worth it.

I have been here 3 times in the past 4 months. Each time has been great. From the wait staff to the food to the people next to us. It is just a great experience. I have not been here on the week ends.

I went here with a friend on Saturday night and had a poor experience. We sat at the bar as we just wanted to grab a drink and split a pizza quickly on our way to a party. I ordered a martini, extra dry which came to me filled practically half with vermouth and half gin -- completely undrinkinkable. After I politely asked the waitress if she would mind fixing it, she responded with a "No" and said that she could not in good consience serve me any more liquor (this being 2 mins after she just brought my first drink). Meanwhile, we were completely sober, hadn't had a drop to drink before. I thought she was kidding at first, but apparently not. We cancelled everything and walked out. It was officially the rudest encounter I've had at a high-end restaurant. I would NEVER go back.

The first time I went to this restaurant, I was thoroughly pleased, perhaps I was enchanted with the space and that distracted from the actual experience or perhaps Gemma has gone downhill significantly in the last few years.But this has achieved the status as one of my least favorite restaurants in nyc which is a shame because the space is fantastic. I got the grilled chicken and greens for $17. The chicken was dry, flavorless and the whole thing was way too salty and oily. I suspect it was about as healthy as kentucky fried chicken and no where near as good. It is suprising that a place like this could take such dramatic steps to insure the food quality is as poor as it is. In addition to that, the service was awful. We were completely ignored at best and the overall experience was so bad, we just tipped 17 percent so as to just leave 2 20s and get out of there as soon as possible. I suspect this place would be out of business within a few years if something doesn't change dramatically to bring it up to at least a bearable status. Even though it is the only place open past 3:30 for brunch, I will never go back there and feel completely cheated and robbed for the money I spent. Utterly miserable in every sense of the word. I never post negative reviews either....

Okay, we have been here before and had a subpar experience, but decided to try it again because there is always empty seating in this place and the atmosphere is good. It wasn't a fluke - this place stinks. For the food that they serve, the prices are absurd (and I don't mind spending money on good food at all). Our waiter was distant, and never checked in to see how our food was. We had to flag someone else down to get bread. He simply took the order, someone else brought everything, and he actually walked by us without even glancing in our direction. I wanted to send the food back (I don't even remember the last time I've wanted to do that anywhere), because the bagel tasted like rubber, but didn't have the opportunity because we couldn't get to the waiter, and we just wanted to leave already. The chicken in my boyfriend's dish was flavorless, salty, and oily; basically just uninspired and lazy. Going to this place is throwing your money away - there are WAY better places all over the city, and especially in this area. They just don't try, and it shows.

We waited a while for a table. The food was just OK. It was nothing special and not worth waiting for..

The wife and I went for dinner at peak time on a Friday. We were expecting a casual italian/brick oven pizza dinner and were pleasantly surprised by a solid selection of traditional pasta dishes and full entrees. In addition, to the standard soup, salad, et al appetizers the menu also included a appetizer selection of cheeses and meats. We started with a cheese/meat platter and were quite impressed with the quality. Although we intended to have pizza (looked great), we decided on a full meal. The salmon and branizino were excellent and perfectly cooked. The junior wait staff seemed to still be in training, but were supplemented by two "brothers" in suits. As a result, the service was timely and attentive. Our only complaint was the somewhat clueless female junior maitre d'. We "walked in" and she quoted us 20-30 minutes. Fortunately, as soon as the senior maitre d' returned to the front podium 30 seconds later, he immediately sat us at a choice table. All in all a great meal.
