Omakase or go away!
I guess they really want to turn this into an Omakase-only restaurant, because I was asked about five times before I was even handed a menu (twice by the front door staff and about three times by my waiter) whether I would be ordering the Omakase. As I had just stopped in for a quick meal (previous visits clocked in at about 30 - 40 minutes) before going to a meeting at the Natural History Museum, I did not really want to spend $100-200 or more on Omakase, so I repeatedly had to say, no I would not be ordering the Omakase. It bordered on obnoxious and I was made to feel very unwelcome that I wanted to order off the menu (imagine!) in this very pricey little place. I told the waiter I only had a limited amount and he still insisted they could serve the Omakase really fast. He just didn't seem to get it. That said, once I forcefully asserted my right to order off the menu (don't have a menu if you don't want people to order from it!), the sushi deluxe was excellent. People who say the fish here is not good don't know what they're talking about. This is real Japan style sushi, succulent small pieces, not those monster portions that some of the more Americanized places serve. Good sushi - yes! Enjoyable experience - no! Being made to feel small for not ordering Omakase is a new one to me and I have been to alot of sushi places. Paying $50 for a 30 minute meal (which is what I did) is something I can accept. Rushing thru a $100-200 Omakase meal just because the restaurant wants you to is something I could not accept.

Do not order delivery
I've never felt inclined to write a review of a restaurant before, but the service was so disappointing I felt I had to write something. I've visited the restaurant a few times in person and had good (but expensive) experiences, but I decided to order delivery tonight because I'm feeling sick and it was a totally different experience. The food took over TWO hours to arrive at my apartment, after I called numerous times and was promised the delivery guy was "almost there" for over an hour.

I left hungry, broke, and postal
Have been dying to try one of Gari's outposts since he made a splash over 10 years ago on the Upper East Side. Severely disappointed. For $56 (I drank only water, got lunch sushi special and additional 4 pieces) I got tiny tiny pieces that were mostly flavorless. I ordered a piece of salmon roe, and it was half the size of what every restaurant gives and twice the price. Gari is a classic NY rip-off. Probably because they expanded from one restaurant to three and now they divide each sushi piece between the three restaurants.

happy ending
Orginally I showed up at another sushi restaurant, but I didn't have a reservation so they could not accomodate me. I was greatly disappointed. Feeling rather rejected and still hungry and determined to get my sushi on, I headed over to gari on columbus ave and was greeted by an extremely friendly staff. I tried the Kinoko and was quite surprised how good the assorted mushrooms tasted. I ordered the mix of gari and was extremely pleased with the result. My date kept munching away with a happy smile on her face. Sake was good however 6- 10 oz at that price is a bit steep, 6oz was like 2 shots each and for working people we all know that 2 shots aint going to cut it but the selection they offered was quite nice so cant complain too much about that. Overall though, what started off on the wrong foot ended up with 2 happy customers, would definitely find my way back there again.

Cheapskates!
Mostly delicious...overpriced food. Waitstaff is mostly lovely, however, what is really terribly annoying is that Gari charges EXTRA for the smallest thing...on top of his already overpriced menu. I was appalled after being charged extra for asking for just a little bit more ginger with my sushi. The first helping was stingy and then charged extra on top of that. Need a bit more sauce for your tempura...EXTRA. Not a classy way to go, Gari. Wise up. I haven't been back since.
