So many better steak choices in NYC
I am part of a group in NYC that hits a different steakhouse every month. In the last year we have been to Del Frisco's, Peter Luger, Palm, Sparks, Smith & Wollensky, The Bull & Bear, Keen's, Uncle Jack's, Rothman's, and others. Without question, our visit to Gallagher's Oct 27 represented the worst service and food of any steakhouse we've been to. The dining room was hopelessly under staffed so a variety of confused waiters only occasionally breezed by our table. The lobster bisque was over thickened and under seasoned. All 5 steaks arrived at the table cold. The highlight food-wise were the onion rings, the other sides were merely passable. Insultingly, the gratuity was already added to our 5 person check when we got it. This is not uncommon for groups of 6 or 8 but I've never seen it at a table for 5 and we didn't see this policy stated on the menu. I guess maybe they do this because otherwise the poor service would mean bad or no tips for the staff. Maybe they just had an off night but I doubt it. Do yourself a favor & pick any of the steakhouses I listed at the beginning of this review and you will have an experience head and shoulders above Gallagher's.

I Love Max the bartender
I went at lunch and sat at the bar. I ordered the beef tenderloin with asparagus. Delicious! cooked exactly the way I wanted. The bartender was funnyand made me feel like a regular. I do recommend this place, I also hear that the burgers are to die for. I will look into that next time around.

Mouthwateringly Great!
This is not a tourist place-- I was born and raised in Manhattan, and this place is the best of the best-- bringing you Old World, and a little taste of the 1920s. The food is excellent-- great steaks everytime-- our waiters have always been polite, and prompt. If you don't have money, you shouldn't be going to ANY steakhouse in New York City because steak is expensive, and it is going to cost you. But don't criticize the restaurant because you couldn't afford to go. My wife and I will continue to go back to Gallagher's Steakhouse again and again.

Perfection
The New York Strip was humungous and done to perfection. Nobody could go there and leave hungry! Salad and steak was all that we needed and then a long walk afterwards.

Great Beef
I am from Indiana but i have been in the city many times and this is my wife and my favorite place to eat . The food is always consistant and really great. The best part is that it is always very comfortable-its like going to your neighborhood place back home except the food is always exceptional. I guess its a comfort thing.

Not recommended
I had a party of 3 and a reservation. The salads were mediocre at best, and they were cleared while I was in midbite. Why? I don't know, because we then waited for a very long time for our entrees to arrive - overcooked. The tourist seemed happy, though - which is how I suppose they make a living. The bill appeared promptly.
