Good Bistro Fare, Lousy Service
French Roast serves good bistro food at a price a little north of what one would expect. The steaks are excellent, the mussels are perfect, and the half dozen or so dishes my girlfriend and I have sampled were always spot-on. However, with all of the available options in the area, the service is inexcusable. all of the waitresses we have had were lazy and aloof, and 3 out of the 5 times we dined there they were rude. It seems as if their main purpose there is to socialize with one another rather than serve their customers. One of them actually had the gall to comment on the 10 percent tip I left. If you're jonesing steak frites or coq au vin, you'll enjoy the meal - just be prepared to wait for it.

Always a great meal
French Roast is my staple. I take people there when visiting from out of town, meet old friends there, and stop in by myself for a glass of wine and the onion soup. Their hollandaise is great on their eggs benedict, and their cheese selection is nice. Wine list a little short, hosts are usually rude, other than that I love it.

Good food, Good atmosphere, Good service
Really nothing wrong with the place, especially if you consider thats its open 24 hours and the food choices are great. Once you figure out a few things that you like, getting a good meal here is not hard. Not the greatest value, but the food has been at least 4 every single time. I have been here probably 10 times over a few years. One of my favorite brunch destination after a party. Oh yeah, there is a line to get in.... often.

We love French Roast but...
French Roast has been a favorite of mine and my boyfriend's for years. The food is always great and we like to eat late because he works late, he is a chef. The past three times we have gone, the service has been subpar. The first time we thought we just caught the waiter on bad night. The second time, the waiter treated us like we were lucky to be at his table. And the last time, was about three weeks ago. The hostess was rude when we asked for a table in the corner. She said the dinner rush might come and they would need it. It was 11:30 at night! Reluctantly, she gave us the table. The waiter was so rude we almost left after we ordered but our food came out rather quickly. The only save was that a man came to the table, maybe a manager, and asked if everything was ok. This was nice but too late. I hate to say we will probably never go back because the food is good, but we will not spend our money somewhere when we can eat at a million other places.

like a rock
French Roast is a great spot in the neighborhood, open all the time with a tasty menu and reliable French fare. The onion soup is the best in the area. The beef Bourguignon special is yummy. A great place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or midnight snack. My wife and I eat there regularly.

Wonderful
I went for dessert with a friend, we walked into French roast and now we can not wait to go back! It is just like sitting in a real French Cafe in Paris, but better because they speak english!! The service was very relaxed, and the coffee is perfectly prepared. this place is AMAZING, I would recommend everyone to go there! Au Revior!

24 hour haven
as we know, in new york there aren't nearly as many 24 hour places to eat as you'd think. enter french roast. the food is pretty simple, with a few french menu items like escargot and croque monsieurs, but it's fine for when you need it. service is also fine, and it's kind of fun to be surrounded by other nightowls/slightly drunk hungry people who want to eat something at 4 in the morning.
