What happened!
We have been going to Freemans for many years and always loved the food. We had dinner there last night with some friends of ours and we ordered the trout, pork, and chicken. When it was served the fish wasn't cooked and we had to send it back. The roasted vegetables that accompanied the chicken were cold and seemed that maybe they were served the night before. We have always recommended this place to friends but after our experience last night I will be a bit more hesitant to do so in the future. It may be that it was an off night so we'll give the place another chance but if the food quality is the same I would suggest that they find a new chef.

Not worth the hype
This is my first food review. I was so disappointed with the food that I have no choice but to write a review. The chicken I ordered was not properly cooked, and the filet mignon my friends ordered was way overcooked. The waiter appeared to be under some sort of influence. Although the atmosphere in the restaurant was good, the food was a total disappointment. Oh, another friend ordered the trout, which she described as ok-tasting, but otherwise bare and poorly presented. Again, just not worth it. This place might have been good once but this Saturday it sucked.

ImmaculateInfatuation's Freeman's Review
Our obsession with Freemans is truly an immaculate infatuation. The worn wooden frame, the taxidermy on the walls, and the beards & flannel employee dress code give this old New York style spot a very hip, yet very Vermont vibe. When this place first opened, it was everyone's best kept secret, but in recent years, Freemans has completely blown up. Since Freemans doesn't take reservations (for parties less than 6), prepare yourself to go across the "alley" to Lorely and have a couple of drinks before you're awarded your table. While the waits are usually quite long (we're talking hours during prime-time), if you're committed, it's well worth it. Everything on the menu is good and priced right. As long as you're willing to make a night of it, whether you're taking out a significant other or just looking for a solid place to go with your friends, Freemans is a slam dunk. Thankfully, new chef Michael Citarella has left former chef Jean Adamson's signature dishes on the menu virtually untouched. Thus, for those who are were used to the Artichoke Dip into Steak Filet dinner setup, it's still the main attraction. Also, in addition to dinner, the brunch is legit, though a little expensive. If you happen to find yourself at Freemans on a Sunday afternoon, we suggest you check out the brisket and eggs dish, which is out of this world. Food Rundown: Artichoke Dip You're committing a serious crime if you don't get the artichoke dip to start - it might just be the best appetizer in New York City. I don't even like Artichokes, but this is easily the best dip I've ever eaten in my life. Have you ever craved a dip before? You will after you try this and I promise you will find yourself coming back for it again.

A True Hidden Gem on the LES...
I just wish It was closer to Chelsea - great decor and all that goes with it. Try the Chicken entree and artichoke dip as a starter... YUMMM

Fashion over function
I've gone to this place since the beginning (since I live in the hood) and the service is just getting worse and worse. The people-watching is good, the atmosphere is cool, but the food is just OK. The Devils On Horseback app is worth checking out but nothin' to write home about. Oh and besides the Hot Toddy, the cocktails aren't that good for some reason.

Good food but not worth the long wait
Waited 2.5 hours to be seated, which is fine, but the service was not good. The hostess was beyond rude. The atmosphere is great, better than the food but then again maybe I would have enjoyed the food more if I had been appreciating the rest of the experience and had not had to wait 2+ hours for a table. That being said the beer garden opposite the street is a great place to pass time while waiting for your table as the bar at Freemans is small and cramped.

Scrumptious Clever Food
This place is not new but it still delivers a surprise. The warm beverages are unusually good (how many places in NY serve a hot toddy??) and the food is fabulous. The devils on horseback are some of the best I have ever had (outdoing even the Spotted Pig), the quail was cooked well and spicefully seasoned. The rabbit entree was truly a work of art both visually and tastefully. Desserts (bananas foster and brownie) lacked the pizazz of the rest of the meal. The hostess was a little rude, but the location and food made up for it. Great place to impress a date with your insider knowledge of New York.
