Went on a wednesday night with three friends. One friend was a tad bit late and the maitre d' told us we could "absolutely not sit" unless our entire party was here, so he gave up our table and we had to wait about 35 minutes for an empty table. we went upstairs to the first come first serve seating to get drinks, those took about 20 minutes to get after we ordered and by the time we got our drinks our table was ready. we ordered the grilled cheddar toast which had a really really sharp taste, more tough to eat then appetizing. We also ordered the artichoke dip which was the best thing i found on their menu. I ordered the lentil salad which everyone ended up eating from my plate because the 5 cheese mac and cheese was too cheesey and the autumn salad was actually just lettuce. My one friend did enjoy the trout and we were glad someone enjoyed their meal. We figured we might as well order dessert because it was the one and only time we would be there so we got the sticky toffee cakes which i was the only one who enjoyed them. The atmosphere was good for a wednesday night, but nothing to go crazy over. Do not suggest you eat here.

Way too expensive
Went for a birthday party and had the set menu. Ordered mid range wine as was a mixed crowd. Had a great time but when the bill came we were blown away. I live in manhattan so I know what things cost but this may rank as one of the most overpriced meals I've had here. I wouldn't have minded if the food was any good but it wasn't. Don't go here. There are many better places

Overrated
Astonishing case of the Emperor's New Clothes. The host, wearing a trying-desperately-to-be-cool black hat and stretch jeans, informs you that you cannot be seated, although the restaurant is empty, and the tables set. The menu is apparently designed by a provincial pub cook to be trendy circa 1980 - e.g., apps are a choice of artichoke dip or "devils on horseback" - a combination of prunes, blue cheese and bacon, which tastes as good as it sounds (i.e., disgusting.) The main courses - second-rate chicken or steak - fine as an in-flight meal in economy. But not worth going out for in NYC. And insane to see vast queues of misled diners waiting eagerly for their chance to feast. Thumbs down all the way.

Mmmm.
I went to Freeman's with a birthday party of 7, which could've been a really painful experience. However, it was simply wonderful! The atmosphere was quaint and just perfect for the occasion. The food was delicious, and my steak was cooked perfectly, nice and red in the center! Our waiter was amazing and very attentive. We were all very impressed by the experience. Do yourself a favor and order the artichoke dip; it's epic, and I'm not even a huge fan of artichoke dip. Will go back again soon!

Needs Consistency
Have been here 3 times before in the past 3 years and have always been happy, however this visit was not as enticing. It was extremely crowded (Friday night) par usual, but there seemed to be mis-communication/confusion amongst the hosts/hostesses as well as the servers. Waited a very long time for each course, and received the wrong bill twice.

not again
food: average Atmosphere: great (customers are trendy) drink: average service: zero Freemans is cool because it is at the end of an ally. But the waiter I had seems like his father just passed-away: No smile-just attitude! Service is key for restauant. The owners need to amend this point, I hope. I will think twice before return to Freemans because of the bad service.

Not the Best.
If you're looking for some decent cocktails and appetizers, Freeman's is great. Anything beyond that falls short. The food is average at best and certainly does not justify its overpriced menu. Being where the hip gather, unless you can reserve a spot, the wait is about an hour and a half and upwards 7 pm and later Thursday night through the weekend. Freeman's charms lies in its decor and its people watching opportunities. The bitter greens salad, however is fantastic.
