    Oily

I had the MOST distasteful experince with the food drenched in oil. I will personally never try it again. Hopefully they can turn the tide, or I doubt they will be able to compete with the many other delightful options in the neighborhood!

    Going Downhill

Have eaten at and ordered delivery from Freds for years and it had for a long time been my favorite casual restaurant in the neighborhood, but have been sensing a subtle change of late. Food is still good, but not much to write home about, and I continuously run into excessive attitude when placing delivery orders. I would recommend it, though no longer take friends.

Great way to start the spring!

We LOVE coming to Fred's when we can sit outside in their sprawling cafe! The French Toast is always amazing and the burgers are the best anywhere! One complaint is that you can't get Mac-n-Cheese until the dinner menu starts. Always friendly and always busy! Best of the Upper West!

    my how things have changed

We've recently had brunch here for the first time in several months and we were not happy with the food. The omlets we ordered were drenched in oil. I couldn't even finish it. The potatoes and salad were still delicious, but the omlets were too oily for our taste. We've haven't returned to feast on their dinner menu yet, but we're afraid whatever we order will be oily too.

Mac N' Cheese Rocks, But Service Doesn't

I loved the mac and cheese, but they could tone down the portions a bit. It may look small, but it's like eating a big, cheesy brick. The light side salad was a nice contrast to the richness of the pasta and the greens were of excelent quality. My husband had the chili, which he liked too, but enjoyed digging into my dinner more. I still couldn't finish it, even with his help. The atmosphere is great too. We're both dog people, so we loved all the pictures and plan on bringing one of our pooch for the wall next time we visit. One complaint though, we went there, because of a $10 coupon we had through the "Diner Deck" program. We've used a ton of these and never had a problem. The cards state that the $10 off can only be off of food and that you have to spend at least $30. The card doesn't specify that you have to spend $30 just on food. With drinks, our tab was about $46, but the waitress wouldn't let us use the card, because she said our food total was only $27 plus tax. She asked us if we wanted dessert, but we just couldn't do it. We were so stuffed. We asked if we could order coffee and she said that wouldn't count either, because it wasn't food. The cards need to be more specific, but we haven't had this problem at other places. We'll use the card next time we go, but if the mac and cheese wasn't so good and the place wasn't so close to our home, I don't know if we would be back.

    Obtuse hostess

My wife and I have lived in the neighborhood for years and have eaten at Freds on numerous occasions. Freds is usually very child friendly. Today, my wife (who is 5 months pregnant), 2.5 year old daughter, and I waited 55 min for an outside table that would sit 3 people. During the long wait, our daughter became restless as it was past her lunch time. Thus, we agreed to sit at a small table for 2. Sixty seconds after agreeing to this less than ideal arrangement, a table for four became available, a table that we had been waiting for. The hostess would not let us sit at the larger table. She stated that she had just given the table to another party of four, but that party had yet to sit down. She would not bend, despite the fact we had patiently waited for that table of four for close to an hour. Not to mention our toddler or my pregnant wife. The party of four had been waiting less than 15 minutes. The hostess did not make any effort to solve the issue, like asking the party of four if we could have the table. We found her attidtude to be obtuse and most inconsiderate. We left eat at another restaurant and have no other recourse than to write this review.

    Mac n Cheese is addictive!

Whoever wrote that review about the mac-n-cheese being bad at fred's is on drugs! It is the greatest! The place is great. It's consistant and a neighborhood staple! Love the bar and outdoor cafe this time of year. It's a must try if you live in the hood.
