    Lost its charm

I've been going to Fred's fairly regularly since moving to the UWS. It was the cozy, dog-themed atmosphere that attracted me to the restarant. The food was always okay and the service was friendly. Something has changed. Prices have gone up but service and food quality have gone down. On a recent visit, the bartender was more interested in chatting up her regulars for bigger tips than she was in preparing a good cocktail. My Manhattan was heavy on vermouth and light on the more expensive bourbon, both of which were served in a glass only slightly larger than a shotglass. At the table, cold, soggy fries were representative of the overall food quality. The server was not very attentive during the first half of the meal and then not attentive at all during the second half as she simply disappeared - never to return. And as far as Fred's is concerned, the same can be said of me.

    Go for Sunday Brunch

$15 pre-fixe brunch includes your entree (choose from omelets and pancakes to burger and sandwiches) plus coffee and a bloody mary or mimosa. Great little neighborhood spot. Cozy digs and yummy food. Always packed, though, so it's on the noisy side.

Was OK. Drinks better than food.

They don't water down their liquor! I ordered the pear martini and it was strong and smooth. I ordered the lasagna and was a bit shocked the plate was so much larger than the food. It seemed to be missing something. I exclaimed "That's it?!" Yet it was filling enough. It tasted ok, a bit bland. A much different flavor and recipe than I expected. It has corn in it. Probably an Americanized version. I can't complain too much as I've never actually made lasagna myself. I somewhat prefer Stouffer's frozen lasagna. I suppose that doesn't reflect kindly. Service was friendly. They had a nice outside sidewalk dining area. Might go back for lunch if in area.

    Just Ok

We had no issues with the service or atmosphere. our waiter was nice, prompt and friendly. they have a wonderful outdoor seating area that is great for those warm summer nights. However their food was just ok. i had the mac and cheese which was not enjoyable considering how many calories it packed. it didnt taste very good and all members of my party seemed to agree. the pasta dishes and burgers seemed to be popular perhaps we just made a wrong choice in entree. overrall the food is very standard and the atmosphere relaxed. they did have excellent desserts so at least that was one bright spot in terms of food. but considering all the great eateries on the UWS i dont think i could ever recommend this restaurant to anyone.

    Slow service, weak food

My girlfriend and I went to the Sunday Prix fixe brunch. The price looked good and the food looked good. We got there and were seated promptly and we ordered soon there after. However, I was brought a poor quality mimosa and she was brought a tea with milk (maybe skim) instead of half and half. And then we waited and waited. I got my food in maybe 20s. but it took another 5 minutes for my girl-friend to get her food. The food was poor. The French toast was slightly burned (but pretty good) but the Heuvos Rancheroes were really week. The salsa was bland and the refried beans were bad and obviously from a can. I was very disappointed. I will not be going back again.

    Bad veggie burgers

Veggie burgers for lunch show up like a frisbee, huge and flat, tasting like a pancake, with lots of egg. You can see te vegetable bits but it's messy and not tight. It's like eating a 10lb meal. If you want to gain one pound over night. Blah. Plus the service is just shy of being like a diner, uncaring. Best thing was the photos of all the dogs inside. That's it, sadly.

    Disappointed

A few friends told me that this place has great burgers. I beg to differ. Although it was not bad, it was average at best. Even the bun was not that great. It basically falls right apart. I was also there during normal NY dinner hours and it was dead. Not sure I will be back.
