    The real deal!

Finally authentic, delicious carribean food on uws. Collard greens are excellent as are the mac and cheese, rice and peas and cabbage and carrots. Stew chicken, fallin off the bone, oxtails omg.The roti,,, I have never had real roti at a restaurant. I only get it when lucky enough to have someone make it for me. When she said it will "take a bit" I new I was in for something good.

    Dinner followed by a nap!

I'm Puerto Rican and eating at Freda's was like an old fashioned family meal. I had the chicken stew with yams and plantains. The chicken was so tender every poke with the fork separated the meat like a hot knife on butter! The yams were perfect, not oversweet as in another famous female-named restaurant in harlem. The plantains were long, flat and very tasty. I took some of the meal home 'cause it was more than I could handle. I gave the atmosphere a low of 3 because there really is no atmosphere, it is just a place to eat, but a comfotable and roomy one. The staff was very friendly and accessible. I didn't have to wait long before I was chowing down. Their prices are insanely low and I'm going back to try every other dish and then I'll simply lay down and die with a full stomach and a smile on my face!

Family Friendly with Excellent Food and Service

Freda's Caribbean & Soul Cuisine is located in a little store front--nondescript--nothing fancy--HEAVEN ON EARTH! We have a large family with 6 of them under 11. We do not want to eat in a Posh restaurant where we would feel uncomfortable. We need good prices and good food. We found it at Freda's. Immediately met with a smile--we were made comfortable--ordered the $6.50 lunch special splitting 3 among our children with their suggestion and blessing! Within a few minutes our food appeared. Jerk Chicken, Baked Chicken, Dirty Rice, Candied Yams, Collard Greens and Homemade Mac and Cheese like my Aunties used to make. Freda and her dear son took the time to welcome us to their restaurant--visit with us and bond with our children. As we have 2 grown sons who live in NYC--we will be back every summer. Freda's will be one of our FIRST stops! Thank you all so much for a magical family lunch!

    You have to try it!

Good stuff. The food is consistent, the folks there are good people and we have never been disappointed. If they messed up a delivery order, they fixed it!

Food is fresh not sitting around. Worth the trip from the Bronx. Great Service! You will not be disappointed!

    What's all the fuss about?

After reading all the awesome reviews, I decided to give Freda's a shot. What a waste of time? I took the train uptown, made the trek down 110th and was totally underwhelmed. I agree with the other reviewers in regards to portion size. The plate was huge!! This meal was a Monet. From far away it looked so amazing so I was extremely eager to eat! As soon as I dug in I instantly thought I was in the wrong restaurant. I have been to the islands many times and this food comes no where near the flavors I endulged in while over there. The peas in the rice were undercooked. The rice itself was soft and mushy. The Oxtails were tuff as nails in the frezzer. The cabbage a mess and the string beans were de-hydrated and shriveled up! I was amazed at the quality of the food. I was very dissappointed and sent my meal back with the hopes that they would make it right. My plate returned 10 minutes later in the same state minus the anemic string beans. When I asked about the string beans I was told "we ain't got no more!!" Hmmm, nice staff! By this time my meal was cold... I was just ready to head back down town where I know I can get a good, clean meal!
