What's all the fuss about?
After reading all the awesome reviews, I decided to give Freda's a shot. What a waste of time? I took the train uptown, made the trek down 110th and was totally underwhelmed. I agree with the other reviewers in regards to portion size. The plate was huge!! This meal was a Monet. From far away it looked so amazing so I was extremely eager to eat! As soon as I dug in I instantly thought I was in the wrong restaurant. I have been to the islands many times and this food comes no where near the flavors I endulged in while over there. The peas in the rice were undercooked. The rice itself was soft and mushy. The Oxtails were tuff as nails in the frezzer. The cabbage a mess and the string beans were de-hydrated and shriveled up! I was amazed at the quality of the food. I was very dissappointed and sent my meal back with the hopes that they would make it right. My plate returned 10 minutes later in the same state minus the anemic string beans. When I asked about the string beans I was told "we ain't got no more!!" Hmmm, nice staff! By this time my meal was cold... I was just ready to head back down town where I know I can get a good, clean meal!

It's all about licking fingers
Don't come up in here with the coolshine stuff...lol. That's how I felt upon entering this spot; like I was in my granny's bootlegging spot. If you are looking to be impressed with anything beyond the food, keep it pushing. Lawd 'a Mercy: The oxtails, stewed chicken were fall of the bone tender and delicious; the callaloo with okra was zee bomb; the rice and peas, though a little overcooked for your mama, was ample enough to absorb the wonderful sauces that accompanied the meats and; the mac & cheese's southern roots mustered enough flavor to stand proudly next to the west indian delights that otherwise dominated the meal. Ms. Freda, the owner's deceased mother from what we were told, must be proud. Let me up in that kitchen honey!

Sigh
I order from Freda's a lot but as of late the delivery service has been below par. I seem to be put on hold 3 or 4 times. I'm actually waiting for my food right now..Its been over an hr. And I just heard the ring.

Delicious Food, Great Portions
Freda's food is what you're looking for if you want a decent west indian meal. As a Trinidadian, who grew up in Brooklyn, I couldn't find any good west indian restaurants once I moved to Harlem. I was on menupages one day and read the reviews about this place & thought I would try it. The food was pretty good for my standards, and the portions are really generous too. The oxtails were great! You will not be disappointed!
