Not like it used to be

We have been going to frank for 10 years and recently something changed - we ordered the ragu, which used to be a heaping bowl of pasta, meatballs and sausage and now is more like noodles and ketchup. If they need to cut quality due to rent increases or some other recent troubles, that's unfortunate but we spent over $70 for a meal which i could have cooked myself for less than $25 (including wine)

Good food, the rest..not so good

Waiting 90 minutes for a table when told it would be a 10 minute wait is unacceptable. Every time we (or anyone else) spoke to the "host" he was rude and not once did he smile, not even when greeting guests. The food is good, very good. But don't be surprised if others at your table get served 10 minutes before you. Also, don't be surprised if they sit 4 of you at a table for two like they did to us. 4 people at a table for 2 is bad until you realize there are really 5 people at your table since the guy's elbow for the adjoining table is resting on your table top. An overall shady operation (cash only by the way) backed with good food. Not amazing, but good.

    Amazing

I usually have bad luck at restaurants and came to Frank on a whim. It completely exceeded my expectations. I had the Buttata Mozzerella special which was the best mozz I've ever had. Entree was the gnocchi. Also amazing. Decent size portions for the price.

Prices went up, still the best

I cannot understand the bitching about this place on Menupages. The only thing that has changed in the past year is there was a price increase of about 20%. Wah wah wah. It allows them to maintain the quality of the ingredients and retain their excellent staff. You don't like it salty? Don't order here, they serve plenty of salt and I like it. You don't like the music? Stay out, I love it. You have an issue with a mandatory service charge for a party of 6? Don't go out to eat in downtown New York! As to people bitching about the delivery food, I have no idea what to tell you. Order Domino's. Delivery food is never going to measure up. I always go to the restaurant to eat. I generally show up no more than an hour before last call so I am seated immediately. The consistency of the kitchen is fantastic and the waiters are attentive, especially late when it is not slammed. And yes they have a bad habit of coursing you too fast to turn the table. You can have the waiter hold a dish at the heat lamp until you are ready to have it served. This works fine for the pasta and grilled dishes that are the mainstay. Or just let him know at the beginning of the meal to take your coursing slower. They are good about it if you communicate what you want.

    Tacky

The food is good, but management is tacky. First, the waiter added a 20% tip to the bill. I suppose this is because we had a party of six. The menu did not state that a 20% tip would be charged on parties of six or more. I think 20% is excessive. Second, the 20% tip charge was on the food, drinks, and the 8.875% sales TAX. When I told the manager that it was wrong to include the tax in calculating the tip he said "we always do it this way." Third, the prices end in 95 cents ($13.95, $14.95, etc.). What is Frank trying to do? Fool us into thinking we are paying a lower price, as a department store does? Fourth, the specials are overpriced compared to the regular menu prices. The prices of specials are not posted at the restaurant (although they are posted on Franks's website). Fifth, Frank is cash only. Good food, but tacky management.

    Truly Authentic

I wonder why everyone rags on Frank. I'm surprised it has so few stars. As someone who grew up in an Italian family, I have to disagree. I'm a pasta freak and am on the constant search for authentic, Italian pasta dishes. Two things I look for: pasta that is actually al dente, and authentic sauce. Out of everywhere I've been in this city, Frank makes the best home-style ragu and marinara around--just like my mother's and and grandmother's and like I find in Italy. And the pasta is ALWAYS al dente. Another favorite? The imported Burrata mozzarella (when it's available). They use San Marzano tomatoes which are, in my opinion, the only tomatoes to use for sauce. Ask any Italian. The prices are steep (boo) and the atmosphere is "cozy" at best, but I think the taste is spot-on. If you're looking for a glimpse of Sunday dinner in a true Italian family, the dishes at Frank are sure to comfort.

    ugh

I' ve never been to a more over rated restaurant. I couldn't say that the food is terrible but paying U$178 for a party of 7 eating just pasta that comes from a box is fair. Plus once we were there the music was perfect for having an indigestion, when we asked them if they could change it for something nicer, the answer was a NO of course. My best review is of course...Don't lose your money.
