Best Chinese Restaurant In Brooklyn Heights!
Well, yes. The staff do appear a little distant, but that's because many of them are new arrivals to America. I've been going to Fortune House for years and I don't think I've ever seen the same waiters or waitresses. It's more of a stopping off point for a lot of these people while they make a little money and improve their English. The important thing is that the staff is courteous, swift and attentive. If they aren't likely to engage you in chit-chat about the weather or your children- tough! Personally, I prefer to keep my banter with servers to a minimum. The food is terrific. You can't go wrong with almost anything on the menu. I would especially recommend the Peking Duck. They serve it in a Moo-Shu style and they fix it up for you right at your table. Great to impress your date with! I've always found the portions to be great and the menu has a nice variety. No, really. The portions are unquestionably decent. Some people are just fat and no sized portion, save a double-sized one, is going to satisfy them. Also, this is one of the few places where the fried wontons they serve you while you await your meal are always crisp and fresh! Not only that, but so are the fortune cookies! Imagine that! Fresh, edible fortune cookies! As others have pointed out, the decor of this place is hideously dated and unimaginative. Still, that dated feel does add some measure of charm in its own way. But the best part of the meal has to be getting the bill at the end. That's a tab I never mind picking up if I'm out with a friend. Two people can get totally stuffed and still have leftovers for a little less than thirty dollars- and that includes the tip! I've been to Chinese restaurants all over town from fancy expensive places, to take-out dives, to authentic establishments in Chinatown. Of all these, I'd have to say that Fortune House is the greatest all-around place for the high quality of the food, the portions and the price.

what a surprise!
Visiting NYC and walked over the Brooklyn Bridge to find this gem. It's looks like your typical chinese restaurant but the food is some of the best chinese I've had in years. We probably wouldn't have tried it but we were interested since most of the tables were full at 7:30pm, which seemed like a good sign. I'm glad we did! We ordered the vegetable dumplings, Cantonese wonton soup, Moo Goo Gai Pan (which was served with rice) and spring and egg rolls. Everything came out hot and fresh. The snow peas in the Moo Goo had that nice crunch. You get tea at the table when you are seated along with fried wontons and a pickled cabbage salad to nosh on while you wait. Read a review stating that the staff was a little indifferent which I would have to agree with, a bit. Though I am not sure if it is indifference or that they are just busy. Very pleased with our find and look forward to going again on our next trip. Bottom line, great food and very inexpensive!!

All around good!
Definitely the best lunch special in the area, and probably the best Chinese restaurant in the area (I've tried many many others). The General Tsao's is absolutely delicious, as is their hot and sour soup and Schezuan beef or chicken. The lunch special price is fantastic, and the regular menu is reasonably priced. The restaurant has a typical old-school NYC Chinese restaurant decor, and while it is a little worn looking, it has charm.

Solid, Classic chinese take-out
If you live down in DUMBO and have limited options, Fortune House is a savior. Food delivered in 30 minutes, simple classic New York chinese food. And a great value. As for eat-in dining , it is a dated worn room, whose highlight is the aquarium. General Tso's is the bomb. Fried pork dumplings, delish, but somewhat doughie.

Not good
I agree, this place is not as good as others in the area. We ordered the egg plant dish which was not nearly as fresh as other chinese places in the area and it was sitting in a greasy sauce which was separated by the time we sat down to eat it. Soups were nothing to write home about.

Save your money and your tummy
We ordered from here based on the recommendations on Menu Pages, and to say it was sub par would be an understatement. There was bone in my wonton and gristle in the chicken. The beef was grey and super low grade. I'd sooner never have chinese food again then waste money and tastbuds on this place.
