Spectacular
Spectacular. I had visted this establishment last year when my relative had their wedding party here. I re-visited the Firebird in January 2009 with business clients and I must say that everything was still as great as when I was here last year. The decor looks like the russian czars palace. The food was very good & was plated in an artistic manner. They had a very comprehensive & impressive wine list and an unbelievable vodka list (Do not leave without trying the Honey Vodka). The waitstaff was very knowledgeable & very courteous. Great food, Great atmosphere, Great decor, Great service. I would highly recomend this restaurant to all.

So-so food, great atmosphere
I went with friends during restaurant week and was disapointed. The service was very good and you can't beat the old-world atmosphere. Firebird is kind of like a theme restaurant (a la Jekyl and Hyde) where you go not for good food, but to experience the ambiance. If you must go, take advantage of better prices during restaurant week and don't expect too much.

Old World Grandeur
My Husband and I had a dinner party there, the moment we stepped foot inside we were taken aback by the decor. The atmosphere is romantic, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to dine like a 'czar'. The food was amazing, I surely recommend the foie gras salad. My overall experience in Firebird was wonderful and will definitely return once again to eat!

It's like a joke...
The treatment you get at the door is straight out of the movies. You're made to feel that you ought to be grateful you're even being considered for entry and that you need to show your bank account. One of our party was 15 minutes late and by the time he arrived, it took us an hour to get seated. The maitre d' kept passing by without acknowledging us. By the time we sat down we had half an hour to order, eat, and pay since we had theatre tickets.

Not recommended
Firebird is wonderfully appointed. It wets the appetite for an experience of great Russian food. The service is lovely. Unfortunately, the food is truly subpar. The caviar-blini appetizer sported spoiled creme, mediocre caviar, and a cold tough blini. The beef stroganoff was comprised of a flat sauce, tough ill-cooked pieces of beef, and globs of noodles stuck together. The chocolate torte was okay, a relief after the fore-going. If you wish to experience the ambiance, I suggest you go to the bar and restrict yourself to a drink.

Fancy but empty
Had a dinner here with a large group of friends. Besides us, only two other tables were busy. The restaurant was pretty much empty on Fri night. I guess I know why, it is pretty pricey. Service was fancy to look at [uniformed staff et al] but rather average. We drank russian style [shots] and they ekpt bringing vodka out and filling it in multiple glasses in front of us to warm ... who needs more than one glass, when I need more, I'll ask! Food was fine. However, one my ukrainian friends sent the borscht back as it did not meet her expectations [and she's the expert:)] That was the most exp borscht ever she said, at 30 greenbacks a pop:) So, overall, nice to visit once, quiet and romantic. Great arts and porcelain displays, 5 stars for the ambiance. Will not be going back though, sorry guys, there are so many places in NYC to choose from!

Great Time
I have read the bad review before this one, and could not believe that I had dined at the same place and even on the same day during restaurant week. My experience at the Firebird Restaurant was indeed a most pleasurable experience. As our group entered this restaurant, the decor was as if we walked into the Russian Czars Palace. Dinner was served and let me tell you that the service, atmosphere and food was great. Take it from me, try it and I know you will agree with my comments. I will definitely come back to this restaurant again.
