Good Food Bad Prices
I went with three friends for dinner last night. We were initially seated inside but the music was so loud, we asked to be moved outside. I have visited Malaysia so do have some knowledge of the food and we all thought it was generally pretty good however, completely overpriced. Nine dollars for three beef skewers, and ther is no distinction in price or size of dish for what they refer to as apps and entrees. The bill came to $200 for 4 of us and we only had one drink each. Overall, while we enjoyed the food, I would probably try one of the other malaysian places nearby.

Overpriced food
My husband and I went with very close friends to dinner at Fatty Crab last night. It's a good thing that we enjoy this couple's company so much because the food (if you call it that) that was put in front of us, for a high price tag I might add, was awful. To start, we politely asked the waiter to stagger our courses, it was a Friday night so we wanted to relax and eat. Basically each dish we ordered from starters, rice to our shared entrees all appeared at the same time. When we inquired about this, the Manager was unapologetic. Ok, now let's get down to business; when the title of the restaurant has the word FATTY in it, one might not think that all proteins on the menu arrive at the table with extra fat attached to them. The duck was gamy and difficult to figure out if the meat was fried, fatty, dull and tasteless or just old duck meat? The short ribs were complete ribs of fat and had no character/ flavor. The fish dish we ordered was slathered in a salty crust that completely overpowered the dish. Overall, what an embarassment to cuisine! We hurriedly payed the hefty price tag for such low quality food and rushed off to Shake Shack (nearby) for some fries and milkshakes!

Enough to turn you off Malaysian cuisine for life!
We love malaysian food, and have been to the meatpacking location. Went to this one on a sunday. The staff were a bunch of part-time actor types and were running the kitchen and the dining room. They were out of all the specials at 6 PM. What a disaster! Still have a bad taste in my mouth. Stick with the meatpacking location where the food is good. This upper west side location should not even bother staying open. What a waste of time and money!

Not dumbed down
We lived in Kuala Lumpur, but came here without high hopes. Most NYC Asian restaurants dumb down the assertive flavors of chilis, fresh herbs and salty fish paste. Wow! This is the real thing. The green mango salad was ultra fresh, with a lively mix of flavors & textures. The whole fish bekal in banana leaf was so tender, cooked perfectly and served with 2 sauces that were equally interesting. I'll be back. My only complaint is the loud throbbing music. I guess they're trying to create a cool vibe but these are UWS locals and families, not the beautiful people. I wish they offered a "eat the good, hold the music" room for people like me.

Great food but too loud
Went for dinner and enjoyed the food, presentation and service. Duck was excellent and so was the fried rice. Service was attentive and they did not rush us out after the meal. Only complaint was the loud music. so loud we could barely hear our server and had to talk way too loud to each other. This was our second visit and we will be back. Hopefully, with a little less volume on the music.

I enjoyed
Most of the dishes are on the spicy side so if you don't like spicy food, like my wife, then you won't enjoy the food here. My wife won't go back cause she felt everything was too spicy to enjoy. Ok, but I like spicy food so I really enjoyed it. Yes, most of the dishes have a kick that ranges from kinda spicy to very spicy. You ask, you order, you learn. I really loved the Fatty Duck dish, the Pork Buns and the Fatty Sliders. The chicken wings were nothing special and the pork ribs were good but I've had plenty better. Very good beer, enjoyable atmosphere, nice servers. Most dishes are overpriced but the 4pm-7pm specials are really worth it. I would go back. My wife LOVED the bathroom..you'll have to experience it for yourself. If you're on the UWS and you want to try something different, here you go.

So happy that Fatty Crab opened on the UWS
Ever since Fatty Crab opened on the UWS my husband and I have taken every single visitor we have had there. We love the wonton mee soup, the steamed pork buns, the nasi lemak and the pickled watermelon and pork belly salad (although the last time we went the pork belly was not as good as usual). But my absolute favorite thing on the menu is their version of eggs benedict over crispy rice cakes with an herb salad. It's only available at brunch but it is well worth the visit!
