    not worth the trouble

    Tried Essex for the first time today and i think this might be the worst brunch experience i've had on both coasts. They told us it was an hour wait and 1 hour later told us it would be 30 minutes longer. after 30 minutes we were told it would be an additional 30 minutes. After another 30 minutes we were told our table was wrapping up. It was an additional 30 minutes until our table was ready. Two and 1/2 hours total for a quoted 1 hour wait. the only pro this place has to offer is handing out drink tickets for when they're "running behind" which should be indicative of how commonplace my experience there must be. if you don't mind being lied to and wasting your sat/sun waiting for a brunch spot (the food others were eating looked pretty ordinary... nothing too spectacular to merit the wait) then this might not be a bad choice for you. also - hostesses did not take responsibility for their misquote of estimated time. i will avoid this place like the plague.

    delicious food- cheap prices

    the food at essex restarant is really good, and cheap for nyc standards, the wine [select]ion is fantastic and reasonable priced as well. the staff is nice to look at, the last time i went i had a hot blond waitress who recommended items on the menu that i never would have picked out, but turned out to be so good. the atmosphere is alright, although the music gets too loud sometimes. i use this place more for dates, not really the place for kids. you need reservations for weekends, ive ended up waiting a while when i dont have one.

    Will never go again...

    I have been to Essex several times (none of which have ever been that amazing) and will never go back. I went for brunch and ended up waiting for 2hrs to be seated when I was originally told it would be an hour wait. At the hour and a half mark, I approached the hostess and she showed me what table we were going to be seated at. Ten minutes later, that table was given to another party. No one even tried to be accommodating. We were told a 2-3 hour wait was typical for Saturday brunch so basically we needed to stop complaining. Why would anyone want to wait that long for mediocre food and poor service? Once seated I attempted to order scrambled eggs with cheese and was told there was no way to put cheese on my eggs even though I was willing to pay for it. and the person seated across from me order a CHEESEburger. The whole experience was incredibly frustrating and absolutely ridiculous. If you are looking for good brunch in the LES try Alias or Little Giant - much better food and great service.

    Brunch= great, Private Party=eh

    I love Essex for brunch, I have been many times and I have to say the pancakes are my favorite pancakes ever. However, I went to a private party on Saturday and it was a mess. The waitstaff cleared plates and vacuumed downstairs (we were on a balcony) as the guest of honor opened her gifts and all in all they just seemed frazzled. The waitstaff hardly had time to set for the party as the brunch crowd left and the party guests arrived (I felt bad for them). They are simply not well suited for parties, but I will be back for brunch.

    Great Mussels Special

    Really enjoyed the dinner here on Tuesday night with fabulous all you can eat mussels. Mussels were mega plump and came with choice of broths as well as french fries and sweet potato fries. Our waitress was extremely attentive considering how busy we kept her with rounds of mussels and half-price mojitos. Have also tried brunchfood is solid but the atmosphere and service can be crazed.

    Overpriced And Awful

    Essex has practically no redeeming qualities. Their brunch comes with '3 drinks' but come in tiny glasses and are premixed, meaning they are watery and tasteless. The food has been consistently overcooked every time we have gone. The waitresses are extremely rude. We had reservations there one day and approached the hostess for our reservation and although the restaurant was empty she had us sit at the bar to wait while she finished eating. THEN she finally seated us. We really wanted to like this place but couldn't, there is nothing redeeming about this place especially in a neighborhood with so many wonderful options.

    great food and drinks, lousy dj

    We have heard nothing but good things about essex, so we decided to have my sisters birthday dinner at essex's. The food came out quickly and everyone was happy with their meal. The tuna sushi was original and yummy and I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly. (just enough spice) Our waiter even gave us drink tickets along with a piece of cake with a candle. Which was so sweet of her and greatly appreciated, since we didn't even ask, so nice. Our group decided to stay to get our drink on at the bar. We would of stayed the whole night but the dj is not very good. His music is out-dated and he needs to learn how to put the songs together. It is the LES, why are we listening to hip hop-madonna music or whatever you want to call, lame music from 1998 on a Saturday night? If I wanted to go to a NJ club I would go already. Overall I loved Essex, will I go back yes, just not late at night for drinks, music not good and too old for LES standards.
