Waste of a Sunday. Rude hostesses. Finally walked out without ever sitting down. Had made reservation for a going away party 1 month prior. I'll never go back and suggest you don't either.

I have never reviewed a restaurant in my life but this place is disappointing. Went here for a friend's birthday and had a 3:30 reservation, but we didn't get seated until after 5pm! The hostess was rude and completely unhelpful the whole time we were waiting, barking that she "didn't know" when our table would be ready when we kept asking. I've honestly never been so appalled by such poor service and refuse to ever go back there.

Essex, is truly a hidden gem. The outside is unassuming and resembles a community room, but once your inside, the upbeat music, the crowds of waiting patrons and mounds of drinks flowing quickly let you know "this will be good!" The $20 prefix brunch special which includes three (3) mimosas, bloody mary's or screwdrivers, are a good deal in itself, but the FOOD is awesome. I've been here a dozen times and never had a bad experience. A MUST TRY...you won't be disappointed.

The tuna sushi spring roll was served over ketchup and mustard....really!?! couldn't think of anything better?? The napoleon potato cake sounded soo promising and it was boiled vegetables dumped over the crispy potato cake. The fish special was ok, tasted mostly like butter. The food lacked flavor and inventiveness, upsetting that i had to fork over $75 for a friday night dinner i usually look forward to.

So I was a little hesistant to try this place out due to the reviews below. But the menu had me! When I arrived I sat at the bar, the bartender was very friendly and refilled my drinks without being asked. I went on a Saturday, and even though I was by myself and with people waiting to sit at the bar behind me, I did not feel rushed in the slightest. I would recommend this place. I went for the brunch, I must say that by the time I left 6 mimosas(HEY you sit at the bar they never let you glass go unfilled) and a Sunday Platter later, I was already raving. Food was fresh and delicate. This might be my new fav brunch spot.

Great experience. Be aware that on sunday, they do not service liquor before 12pm (as per NY Law). We got there at 11 and had a great meal until 12 (at which point we began drinking heavily- it was before a World Cup game after all...) Our waitress consistently brought us free coffee and juice until 12pm rolled around. Probably the best brunch experience I've had in NY for the price. They just want you to have a great sunday- and I did!

Half price drinks combined with great daily specials make this my go-to place on the the lower east side. Creative menu is generally well executed, attentive young staff and an interesting decor. Very eclectic music playlist.
