    Great Atmosphere, Great Food

Their oysters are the freshest, fattest and most delicious in the city -- and at $1, they are also the cheapest. Also recommended, the crabcake: all lump meat, it rivals City Crab's and costs less. I like also that you can still have a conversation without shouting and the decor is hip but comfortable. I didn't have any problem with the service the night I went, but I could see if it got busy, you might easily be forgotten. Overall, one of my all time favorites.

Essex Brunch vs bad customer service

Essex will promise you a 1/2 hr wait (which is standard at most NYC restaurants)... 1-2 hours later your table will be ready, only you'll find waiting for your food just as long as the wait for the table. The unhelpful staff may come up with any excuses as to why your food is taking far too long. Everything from, ?we're busy? to ?your food went in behind other large orders? ?where?s our food it?s been over an hour and it?s 5pm already? English muffins for our table were never offered as they should have been and after an hour or so of waiting I took the to the helm and asked the manager (who was comfortably eating her brunch at the bar with other employees) where our food was. She gave me many unacceptable excuses (see above).

    Hipster Feel For Less

Essex has a great brunch with a varied menu and 3 drinks included (although no one seems to count). I went for dinner one Thursday when the wait at Schiller's was too long. It turned out that Thursdays they serve $1 oysters and half priced cocktails until 9pm. The ambiance is great and I'll definitely go back.

    A restaurant for all palates

Essex offers an interesting mix of Jewish & Latin food in an modern, loft-like space. The menu is very original and varied, offering everything from filet mignon w/goat cheese and roasted pepper flan for the true carnivores to potato cake napoleon for vegetarians. Not to be missed are the potato pancakes - a house specialty.
