Ellen's Stardust Diner

When planning our trip to NYC some friends told us this is a 'must do'. I would have to disagree. Although the food was very good, the restaurant was loud (great music doesn't have to be blaring, and this was by no means Broadway) and way overpriced. I expected to pay a higher price in NYC, but we went to upscale restaurants that weren't as pricey as this diner. If someone asked me today, I would tell them if they were going out to eat with people they don't like and don't want to have any conversation with and these same people have offered to pick up the check, go ahead, but otherwise...skip it.

I was so excited about eating a Reuban from NY and it was so nasty I couldn't even eat it, not to mention it was $16.95. The food was very overpriced and if you don't get a sit on the bottom floor, you don't see the waitstaff singing. It was loud and I would never go back. My daughter's food was bad as well.

We went to Ellens Stardust Diner four times during our one week stay in New York this spring. We loved the entertainment, the atmosphere, and the food! Absolutely marvellous! High quality performers. Amazing milkshakes! The music was a bit loud, but it was so much fun listening to the singers, that it did'nt really matter. We are definately going back next time we visit NY!

This is one of my favorite places to eat lunch when I am in New York! The talent and friendliness of the servers is amazing!!

I have craved a grilled cheese w/tomato sandwich for more than a week now and did not know where to get one locally that would satisfy my craving. When I ran an errand one day and saw Ellen's Stardust Diner, I committed it to memory. I chose today (6/14/12) as the day I would enjoy the sandwich and was extremely disappointed. Firstly, the gentleman who took my order said I could have cheddar cheese instead of American. The sandwich was made with American cheese. The accompanying waffle fries were very cold. The waiters and waitresses were so concerned with receiving a tip that they forgot to include condiments, utensils and napkins in the take-out bag. I am all for tipping, even when ordering take-out, but often regret having done so when I see that a complete fulfillment of my order was neglected. The music was extremely loud though the staff members were gifted. I thought their "performance runway" was a bit inconsiderate for the diners who were seated and had to endure the waitstaff walkiing and then standing on a spot directly above where they were seated. In short, if you enjoy being entertained, then add Ellen's to your list. However, if you crave good comfort food, you might want to look elsewhere.

Ellen's wait staff last night were an amazing group of performers. Two of the women, especially had voices that should be heard on a Broadway stage or a recording instead of this Broadway diner. Have read a great deal of reviews of Ellen's on this site and have to say to the negative comments about service that if you go there you should be aware that service can be slow because your servers are also your entertainment. For the negatives about the tip jar they pass around, you should also understand that these servers are not paid well, and living off of their tips, which in a tourist place can be iffy. Obviously the management there is cheap. The food is basic, the place kinda shabby, and they are getting the maxiumum use out of a minumum number of staff. Actually, it was kinda interesting to watch a waiter sing and enter an order into the computer at the same time. The food reviews that are positve here are probably not from folks use to fine dining. However, the food is servicable and no different than what you'd find at the other touristy spots like Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock. Don't go there if you are in a rush. Don't go there if you are looking for a great meal. Don't go there if you are looking for a cheap meal (tourist restaurant + tourist restaurant prices). But DO go there if you want a different type of entertainment experience with your meal. Again, as performers, this wait staff is phenominal!
