Dating spot
My boyfriend took me to el maguey y la tuna a few days ago and I felt in love with this place. The atmosphere is cozy and loving. It is very romantic. The service is friendly and polite. I love thier senorita and chihuahua margarita. Their mole verde is flavorful and enjoyable. Stuff Jalepeno are to die for! El Maguey Rocks!

Go Vegetarian
Having grown up in Arizona, I love Mexican, but I have tried dishes from here twice, and both times the meat was of the lowest quality. Actually, the last meal I picked out the chicken--never have I seen such a piece of flesh in a burrito. The atmosphere is really authentically Mexican, which means it is cheap, real and the people are genuinely nice, and sometimes your chicken...

Best mexican food in new york
This restaurant is simply a gem. Some dishes are fancy (their mole is excellent), but mostly they have affordable, fresh, tasty standards. Their guacamole, salsa, margaritas, are always slightly different because always made from scratch and from fresh ingredients. Even their quesadillas (the least interesting mexican dish) are wonderful - not greasy, with light crunchy tortillas. I also recommend their mexican hot chocolate and their flan. If you are lucky the manager will come out and chat with you!

Awesome
This place is great. Far far better than any of the newer trendy mexican restaurants opened recently in the les....and when you walk in the hostess/waitress is genuinely ecstatic to have you. Food is excellent, very authentic, well priced, simply brilliant.

Back to reality
One of the best feelings is when you walk into a restaurant with no expectations, and you are completely impressed. from the moment i walked in, until i left, I enjoyed myself completely. I live in the lower east side and am genuinely bored with all of the new restaurants that lack any kind of warmth and character. come here to feel anonymous to feel relaxed and to enjoy the food. the staff is friendly, attentive and make you feel at home. staff suggestions are a plus, and their drinks are great too. last night was my first time, and will definitely not be my last.

I lived above this place!
El Maguey is wonderful. I lived in an apartment over this lovely restaurant for one year, and enjoyed the food tremendously. A native Californian, I've missed good home-cooked Mexican food. I can assure you their food is prepared with love and will transport one out of New York temporarily. The mole enchiladas are succulent and tender, the mole sauce is spicy and tangy with plenty of lime. Also, order a traditional Mexican beer (they have Sol, hard to find) to wash your food down. Top it all off with some flan. It's heaven.

It's all about the food...
This is one of, if not THE, greatest mexican restaurants in the city. Atmosphere is low key, no frills, laid back and friendly. Food is authentic, plentiful, distinctive, and delicious. They have all the basics and a slew of original recipes on top of that. They are not another one of these lower east side trendo mexicana places who boast about their mojitos and serve up less than average food. Here it is all about the food. And yes, they have a slew Mexican beers to choose from - which is more than perfect. This one of the most kick-back dining experiences you will have in NYC - go in your sweats, bring a date, go with a crew - just be prepared to eat and enjoy. The owner is an absolute doll and makes the experience worthwhile. And try the Sopapillas for dessert...positively sinful. Ole!
