Iv'e been going here since High School over 30 years ago, the atmosphere isn't the best, however, it's about the food !

Real food for REAL PEOPLE!
I am tired of these "foodie people". They just don't get it. Real restaurants are gone in this city. You go to El Faro they remember you!!! The food is quality and I always go with the Tapas!! Entrees are good but large! Sangria is awesome. Look most places are corporate-you just treated like cattle. Want decor, Paparrzzi, scene, food presentation-go to pastisis or any other of the corp. places that have spung up. You want value, excellent food a nice portion and treated like a human being this is your place. One of the last REAL places left in the city. Foodies get REAL!!!

Not for Paella
The Paella is eh. The other food seemed better. Skimp the paella and try some of the other dishes.

steer clear of tapas
I went to El Faro last night and didn't read the reviews here before going. So I ordered tapas. The calamari was thickly breaded and tough. The anchovies were great. But the potatoes were just unacceptable. The prices are pretty high for what you get. The service was prompt and pleasant though. And I did like the hole in the wall, old school atmosphere. But if you've been to Spain, you know this is in no way authentic.

love it
We have been coming here for years. The food is always the same - fantastic! I think its the best value in all of NYC. I typically get the green sauce which happens to be my most favorite thing in the whole world. We always drag other couples with us and without exception they keep coming back even without us. Their sangria is delicious - even if its a little potent. The one downside to the restaurant is its size and decor however both add to the charm of this truly NY find.

Very Disappointed
Place was recommended to me as a very good spanish restaurant. Overall, though, a disappointing experience. Our waiter was nice and pleasant, but really didn't hold up in the service department. We kept having to repeat ourselves and he never got the order correct, which was frustrating. He didn't come around too often, so I had to ask someone else for a steak knife for veal. His response made me feel as if I was an inconvenience to him. The food was OK at best. The shrimp with Green sauce was clearly the best dish we had. The shrimp was fresh, and the sauce was a flavorful combination of garlic and varioius spices. Was very much like a Gambas Al Ajillo dish except the sauce wasn't as starchy. Enjoyed it very much. The Veal was ok at best, but the pulpo, which is normally my favorite spanish dish, was just plain bad. It seemed like they just boiled the octopus and served it without any seasoning. If I had a spontaneous craving for the Green sauce, I would come again. Otherwise, not worth it.
