A rare value in the theatre district
I like the selection of entrees, sandwiches, and sides. The food is good without any pretense of fanciness. Not the most attentive service in the world, but pleasant waitstaff and you can leave quickly or linger as you wish.

Pretty much subpar all around
The waitress barely paid attention to us even though we were one of 3 groups in the place. Some of the food was barely edible. I ordered a steak sandwich, they brought out a chicken sandwich. Then they charged the 18% gratuity on top of it. It has been the only time in New York City when I have been offended by a place being able to be open.

Bad service, No ambiance, So-so food
Dishes are hit or miss. The pastel boriqua, tostones, and yuca were good. The red meats, not so fresh or flavorful. Avoid spending over $50 at El Deportivo, or else you automatically get charged 18% for service.

Not worth your money
The whole experience at "El Deportivo" was very disappointing from their service to their food. Our waitress was very nice at first, but after she brought our drinks it took her a while to come back for our order. We ordered "bistec de palomilla", it was dry, very thin and didn't taste good. The yuca frita and the tostones were very good though. After we were done with our dinner, our waitress just stopped paying attention to us and didn't even come back to ask if we wanted dessert. We had to request that from the bartender/waiter. Then we had to wait much longer to get the check, from a different waiter. Our waitress just didn't come back to our table at all. The place is not that big, and she was attending tables next to ours. Then when we finally got the check, they had charged us 18% tip! We were only 4 people. They said all orders above $50 get the automatic 18% tip! WHAT?! I never heard of such a ridiculous rule. And they even charge tip on the tax amount. I am certainly never going back there and will not recommend it to anyone.

excellent
Mostly every year I ran the New York City Marathon, and once finish and take a bath, walk to eat my favorite food, rice & beans. Also my favorite fresh salad including avocado if available. The taste of food is a caribbean one(Puerto Rican Taste). For our "Paladar" its great to eat like home made by mom.and prices are lower than most of this category, Where to eat good and with flavor, El Deportivo, see you in november 2, 2008.

Home Sweet Home
I absolutely love the food here. I've been going to El Deportivo for years and the food has been consistently good. Authentic Puerto Rican cooking with Dominican flair - it's pretty amazing. Even my picky kids love to eat here. The place itself is simple but that doesnt matter. There's generally a family atmosphere and the portions are plentiful. Okay, now I'm hungry! I'm ordering delivery service.

Good Eats
I have been coming to this restaurant on and off for more than 10 years. The food is always great just like Mami makes. For this location, you can't beat the price. The food is fresh, tastes good and is as homemade as homemade gets. The portions are healthy (I always have enough for another meal). Decor is pretty basic but clean. If you want a good belly scratchin' meal, I highly recommend this restaurant.
