    Just No

Very sad experience indeed! Came in on a Friday evening, dinner for two. Promptly seated. Ordered the croquettes, cauliflower gratinada and veal short rib. Asked about the best bottles for our meal and sampled a couple - served two glasses, but left with the bottle without us noticing. Tried several times to get our waitresses attention to ask about the bottle - took our food getting served to have a chance to ask. After a lot of back and forth with a language barrier, we figured out they served us by the glass. We tried to argue to no avail, she just kept saying she'll get us a new bottle. Frustrated, we ordered 2 more glasses. Ended up paying more for 4 glasses than we would have for a bottle - this made my face flame. The food - croquettes were amaaaazing, spinach and cheese, wow! The cauli was a deep dish of bechamel sauce, topped with bechamel sauce, with some cauliflower. Totally bland and way too rich. The short rib was the biggest disappointment - dry dry dry, listed as being served with a green tomato chutney, spicy cheese and pickled jalapenos. There was NO chutney, but some quartered red cherry tomatoes with some juice from the short rib. I was most upset about the chutney, asked the waitress, and she returned from the kitchen stating that the chef had "mixed it in this time" - WHAT? They must think we're blind and stupid. At this point I was ready to scream, so we got the check and hightailed out of there. For $60 a head, I expected a far better experience. Never again.

    Great addition to the avenue

Not sure why no one has reviewed El Born yet, but I'm happy to be the first. If you told me when I moved here in 2001 that one day a tapas place would open in Greenpoint, I would have laughed. My wife and I took our kids there on a summer weeknight when I noticed that they had a garden. Usually a table with kids are pariah in certain parts of North Brooklyn, but we were treated very well, with extremely attentive service. The food was great - my kids tried pretty much everything and enjoyed most of it. Wine selection is decent, cocktail list is great. Overall, it was a meal that makes not living in Manhattan totally worth it. We will likely go back without children so we can eat all of the grilled vegetables this time.
