East Japanese used to be a great place! The fish was always fresh, the service has been awesome and lunches and dinners were reasonably priced. Last time we've been there the tuna looked greenish, they weren't able to roll the makis probably, the rice tasted like it came just out of the freezer and the service was rude. Stay away from this place!

This restaurant has good food and inexpensive but service is poor. Slow, order mistake and some staff doesn't understand English. When we ordered delivery, phone disconnected after hold 5 minutes three times. And finally she said delivery took 1 hour. This is such a shame because food is not bad.

After living in Japan for some time, I love finding authentic and fresh Japanese food. East Japanese is not it at all. The sushi and avocado rolls were mediocre at best. The miso soup was okay and the teriyaki chicken was TERRIBLE. The chicken didn't taste like real chicken but instead some cheap, synthetic version. We could not even finish eating so we decided to go find something at home instead. With all of the choices in nyc, find another Japanese restaurant!

as a vegan, i search for japanese eateries willing to bend some rules. EAST on w 55th has done so for me time and time again. the staff is welcoming, the prices moderate,(obviously i'm not consuming the more expensive items), the portions generous. i usually dine here with omnivore buddies and they have no complaints!

We chose this restaurant because of it's location. It was such a surprise. The staff were all very nice, even those not waiting on us. We ordered a bento box and a side of fried oysters. Every item was amazing. Cooked to perfection and very fresh. The price was well below the NYC average. I would definately return to this restaurant.

I discovered this gem through two of my colleagues last year. We go at least once every 3 or 4 mths. for lunch. I always get the #10 Lunch Box and I absolutely love it! I don't like raw fish but I love their California rolls, they are the best. The service is good, the place is warm & inviting.

I just finished eating my meal from East, delivered to my office, and it was okay. The delivery service was great, so I may order again. But the food was nothing to write home about. I'm from Jersey, and near me, we have some truly spectacular sushi places - better than I've had anywhere else, be it Manhattan, Philly, DC... no sushi places in those cities have approached the quality of the three sushi places that I regularly eat at in NJ. But of the places that I've tried in NYC, this one is among the better. The first thing I'll typically order is the sushi regular/deluxe, because I want to get an idea of how fresh the fish is and how good it is - and sometimes, rolls mask the quality of the fish. I also typically get a roll and an appetizer (to get a tiny idea about how the cooked food is). If the place is good, then I'll venture into the more interesting stuff. I ordered the sushi regular, the shrimp tempura roll, and gyoza. The gyoza appetizer was fantastic. It's a very simple dish, but some places just don't get it right. East gets it right. A shrimp tempura roll's a shrimp tempura roll. Nothing to comment on here. It was fine. The fish is relatively fresh and of decent quality - not the best, melt-in-your-mouth fish, but not too shabby. The only problem was the yellowtail, which tasted really fishy. Not sure why, but it did. No place that I've gone to in the City had fish as fresh as I get at home, but this place probably came closest. Not great, but not bad at all. I could go for East again. Can't comment on atmosphere and service, because I got delivery... but it was fast delivery, so I gave a 4 in atmosphere and a 4.5 in service. Value - it's standard sushi fare. Nothing extraordinary, but I wouldn't mind eating here again. I'm eager to try out some teriyaki or cooked food next time.
