It used to be a great place...
East Japanese used to be a great place! The fish was always fresh, the service has been awesome and lunches and dinners were reasonably priced. Last time we've been there the tuna looked greenish, they weren't able to roll the makis probably, the rice tasted like it came just out of the freezer and the service was rude. Stay away from this place!

Good food and not service
This restaurant has good food and inexpensive but service is poor. Slow, order mistake and some staff doesn't understand English. When we ordered delivery, phone disconnected after hold 5 minutes three times. And finally she said delivery took 1 hour. This is such a shame because food is not bad.

its what you make of it
i've had extremely bad & extremely good experiences at east. (both food and service) but it's one of the best in hells kitchen---midtown. being vegan, i am happy that they modify certain menu choices with a smile. sake lime is the best deal on planet! they have a huge variety on menu...ask for sandy the waitress---she's the best!

Find another Japanese restaurant
After living in Japan for some time, I love finding authentic and fresh Japanese food. East Japanese is not it at all. The sushi and avocado rolls were mediocre at best. The miso soup was okay and the teriyaki chicken was TERRIBLE. The chicken didn't taste like real chicken but instead some cheap, synthetic version. We could not even finish eating so we decided to go find something at home instead. With all of the choices in nyc, find another Japanese restaurant!

the best midtown japanese
as a vegan, i search for japanese eateries willing to bend some rules. EAST on w 55th has done so for me time and time again. the staff is welcoming, the prices moderate,(obviously i'm not consuming the more expensive items), the portions generous. i usually dine here with omnivore buddies and they have no complaints!

Great dinner.
We chose this restaurant because of it's location. It was such a surprise. The staff were all very nice, even those not waiting on us. We ordered a bento box and a side of fried oysters. Every item was amazing. Cooked to perfection and very fresh. The price was well below the NYC average. I would definately return to this restaurant.

The BestCalifornia Rolls in Town!
I discovered this gem through two of my colleagues last year. We go at least once every 3 or 4 mths. for lunch. I always get the #10 Lunch Box and I absolutely love it! I don't like raw fish but I love their California rolls, they are the best. The service is good, the place is warm & inviting.
