Gotta love the conveyor belt sushi!!

My fiance and I ate for the first time at East Japanese Restaurant and absolutely loved it! The sushi was extremely fresh, very tasty, and we loved the diversity of the conveyor belt. It is the best way to taste a lot of different rolls at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend if you are in the neighborhood to try it!

    So much fun!

I've never ordered kitchen food from here besides gyoza but my friends weren't big fans. We're crazy about this place for sushi though. Sit by the counter and order from chef or staff to ensure the freshest taste possible. By no mean is this the best sushi in New York but it's affordable enough that you can experiment without a big dent in your wallet. I once took a sushi novice who never had anything beyond deli california roll and we had a blast. At the end of the night he was chomping away on sea urchin and giant clams! The place is reasonably-priced and just simply fun. Stay away from kitchen entree though. And the other reviewers are right, nicest hostess ever!

    Fun place to go w/friends

I love this place! They did up their prices slightly but then again tell me who hasn't lately? Sitting in front of the conveyor belt is a novelty, and if you don't see what you want, you can simply order it from the very friendly and fast waiters or waitresses. I love when they scream "Irashymase!" (I may not have spelled that right) when you come in every time! Overall, a fun dining experience. Great when you're alone, too, because you can sit at the counter and just munch away.

    conveyor belt

usually i like to get seated next to the conveyor belt because i find thrill in taking the plates off of it. they're smart because a typical price of a roll is say $3 for california. but if u take it off the belt it comes with four pieces and its not as worth it if you ordered a whole roll from the start. they trick you into thinking that its more cheaper/worth it to eat off the conveyor belt. the staff is very firendly and if ur unlucky or if u go during very busy times, you might have to wait a bit for a table. no longer than 15min. the lunch special is quite expensive compared to the other cuisines offered in the area. the food isnt always fresh from the conveyor belt. you taste it when u eat the sushi because the seaweed isnt crunchy, its really chewy and soggy. sometimes its better to sit in front of the chefs so you can ask them to make it even though theyre right in front of you. you can also request the servers to help you find a roll that youre looking for but that doesnt guarantee its freshness either. however, compared to the rest of manhattan, this place isnt expensive for sushi/jap food. but if youre just looking for lunch in the neighborhood i'd say save your money and grab something more worth it.

not the greatest chicken aka turkey teryiaki

after seeing a review for being a top rated takeout restaurant in my area, I decided to give the place a shot. the sushi was all right, nothing worth bragging about tho and the chicken teryiaki was disturbing. we couldn't figure out if it was chicken, turkey, or God knows what. even the teryiaki sauce sucked. On a positive note, they were very pleasant taking my order and delivery was fast. i, however, definitely won't be ordering from there again.

    average food

I used to think this place was a great deal for the quality of sushi (fresh, but nothing special) but after coming here 3x a week I started getting so sick of the sushi rice seasoning. I can only eat here once in a while because of that. Also, I went there last night and noticed THEY RAISED THEIR PRICES! It's no longer that great of a deal. What's up with our economy

Fun! (but not for serious foodies)

I went here on a busy Saturday night with two friends who had already been, and my best friend who was visiting from LA. We were all really excited to see each other, and a crappy venue would've ruined the visit. East was AWESOME. I have to say that the hostess was probably the nicest hostess I've ever encountered in NYC. She was really cool about the fact that two of us arrived sooner than the other two, since you can't be seated in a booth for four until you're all there, for obvious reasons. Every time a new booth opened up, she'd pop outside to where we were waiting to ask if our two friends had arrived yet. She was super friendly and outgoing, and when our party finally was all present and accounted for, we were seated right away. The sushi conveyor belt was super fun, and everything was really simple to figure out (cost and what exactly it all was). The wait staff was also nice and efficient, brought us multiple waters each because we were super thirsty, and brought our kitchen order (edamame and rice) with no problems. The sushi is average- nothing amazing, but the cheap prices reflect that, so it's a good value. It is all fresh though! We liked the funny loud music- it might not be for everyone, as it's generally whatever is playing upstairs at the karaoke bar. (Are the two places co-owned? The bathroom is upstairs. A clean one too, by the way- always a good sign!) Basically everyone in the place was bopping to Michael Jackson and C+C Music Factory, downing bubble-topped colorful plates of sushi, and having a grand old time in general. We stayed literally until they closed, eating and chatting, until the staff started talking it up with us too. It was a great night, and I would definitely go back. Heck, I'm taking a friend there tonight!
