Fine neighborhood place
Hmmmm, sorry to see some of these negative reviews. I stopped in here last night spur of the moment on the way to a lecture at the Natural History Museum and I thought it was a fine neighborhood place. Very welcoming atmosphere and friendly service. Food was good, not great, and maybe a little expensive for Indian food (I am used to cheapo places in the East Village and Lexington Avenue). Not a destination restaurant, but I will certainly stop by again when I am in the area.

where did the original chef go?
Sadly, I have to agree with Indian Food Lover's post on 12/2008 below. I live across the street from this place and was a regular from the day it opened. As this reviewer stated, they served great Indian food for several months, far better than anything in the neighborhood. Crowds were out the door both on weekends and weekdays. I couldn't get enough of the food either and was delighted this place was across the street. Then, slowly but surely, the faces inside began to change until the original crew most nearly disappeared replaced by a new staff including the manager. The food quality and service soon became uneven during this transition period until a couple of months ago when it has become so poorly prepared - a tragic comparison to what it once was. During this transition period, they brought in a weekend buffet and just lately there is a weekday buffet as well. I didn't think this was a good sign. Been to the buffet at least three times and it tastes like something you can get at a local salad bar. Also seems like the entrees are mass prepared even when the buffet is not served. The former manager treated everyone extremely nicely and made sure his staff worked hard to refill water and provide good service. Now it's the opposite. .... and, of course, the crowds have recently disappeared and the place is empty. I waited until everyone returned from vacation to post this but, now that everyone is back, the place is still empty even on a busy weekend evening when other nearby restaurants are packed. This is so disappointing. Bring back the other chef!

Bad
Tikka Massala did actually taste of Campbell's tomato soup. Fairly bad.

Good food. Nasty service
We were attacked to order wine almost before we were seated. The wine list was grabbed away. The food was good, but didn't appreciate how we were treated. Why don't they give a person a chance to consider what wine goes with the food ordered?

great for take out
Never eaten in the restaurant, but for delivery it's the best Indian in the neighborhood. Dal e Durga and Raita delilsh. Try 'em. All the breads are well above par.

consistenly great
We order from here once a week and just recently ate there. It is consistently the best indian food on the UWS.

I thought it was good actually!
I ate here last week and then checked the reviews and am surprised. I had a delicious meal here. My group shared several dishes and enjoyed all of them. The service was great, our waiter was very attentive and the host (owner maybe?) was nice and welcoming. The decor is what you'd expect from an indian place and clean. It's a good go-to indian takeout place.
