this place has the best priced yummiest dumplings in the whole damn city. i didn't know they renovated so i was totally shocked when i went back to see it transformed. it's great they expanded, but the service here is still poor. i recommend it anyway, of course..cuz the food is banginnn'!

It's better than before
I love this place. My parents live on the same block. Grew up in the naighborhood. Everytime I celebrate Chinese New Year at my place I go there to get bags of their dumplings. My friends love them. I am happy they expanded. It is alot better now because you prepay and wait for the number to be called. Plus, nobody gets skipped. The system is great. Because I used get skipped alot. And be waiting forever to place a order. It's not crampy like before. Vanessas' dumpling are awesome!

Better before the expansion
I went there for the first time after the expansion and was disappointed by the experience. The most obvious change was the price, which I can understand as a lot of work went into the renovations. The ordering process is now computerized and you prepay before you get your food. This is where the process broke down. I ordered $1 of Chive dumplings and $1 of cabbage dumplings. The chives dumplings was ready, but the cabbage dumplings were not. I wound up waiting 40 MINUTES for the cabbage dumplings as other items were being cooked before the cabbage dumplings were back in rotation. Standing and waiting 40 minutes is silly for $2 worth of dumplings. I counted 11 people on staff, but only ONE person frying the dumplings and pancakes. Before the change in the ordering process, it's easy to just walk up and buy whatever is ready to go. If it's crowded, I'd come back another time. Because of the prepay, now you're stuck waiting instead of being able to make subsitution for what's available or just walking away. I think they should have stuck to their knitting and ran the business as it was: cheap, charming (in a hole-in-a-wall way), and efficient.

Got more expensive, new name?
The place got bigger, a little more espensive, and looks like they're Vanessa's Dumplings now? Were they bought by her or something? Good food still.

New Owners?
I live in the area and have going here for some time. So naturally I noticed it was closed for an extended period of time. I walked by today and it was triple the size than it used to be! Same great food and it is very clean looking which is nice. BUT dumplings are now 4 for $1 and sesame pancakes with toppings went up a quarter. Still a good deal on a budget. The clientele was more hipster/Williamsburg/cool-to-be-lame and less Chinese. Too bad. Also everyone working there is wearing hats and shirts that say "Vanessa’s dumplings." Were they bought out or just a name change?

Great Dumplings
I love this place!! There's always a line outside for takeouts. The fried dumplings are the best. So cheap too!
