You won't regret it!
The Downtown Bakery is the best Mexican place I've ever been to in NYC. Their food is scrumptious. The meat is actually well-seasoned and a tad bit crispy in certain areas adding that lovely burnt flavor. Their hot sauce is actually hot. The workers are very nice and say hi and bye and if you are staying in they will take the food to your table. It's a very small place. There are only three tables and a counter with about 4 or 5 stools if i'm correct. Ever since I discovered this place I eat there almost once a week and I never touch San Loco unless I'm broke. I forgot to mention that the tacos are of a decent size and I'm usually full after one, but I'm small so maybe it doesn't count. They are decently priced as well.

Best Mexican I've Had Since I Left SD
After living in San Diego for three years, I moved to New York last August. Since then, the Mexican food here has been consistently disappointing. In San Diego, taco stands are everywhere, and you rarely, if ever, pay more than five bucks for a good-sized burrito. The $9-13 New York versions, for the most part, pale in comparison and make the "gourmet" Chipotle burritos (which are also overpriced here) look like a good deal. If I want to spend that much on a meal, I'll get Thai or Italian. And no one in San Diego puts brown rice in a burrito (a la Burritoville). I was better off if I cooked the seasoned carne asada from Trader Joe's myself. I should note that I'm not saying that the Mexican food I've had elsewhere in this city tasted bad, but that it doesn't taste the way Mexican food should. Aside from attempts to turn burritos into high class cuisine with funky ingredients like brown rice or barbeque sauce, it's hard to say why it's so different. But it is. So, I was thrilled when I tried the carne asada burrito at Downtown Bakery. The beef was cooked perfectly, with a nice (slightly crispy) sear on the outside. The rice and beans were flavorful, and the pico de gallo was fresh. And, at "only" $6.50, it's cheap too. I've had this twice, and it was just as good the second time. I should probably try some other things on the menu, but I don't know if I can resist ordering it again. If you want to try Mexican food that doesn't taste like it was made 2000 miles from the Mexican border, go here.

Fresh Delicious Mexican Food!
This is by far the best Mexican food in the city. Great for takeout but they do have a few tables for eating in. They have incredible breakfast specials and their burritos are amazing! The food here tastes so fresh, never greasy! The staff is so friendly and helpful and they keep the place immaculate! Highly Recommended!

The Only Option
Moving to New York from San Francisco was great in all respects except one: there are no decent burritos in this godforsaken city. Or so I though for my first couple of years here. But that all changed when I moved to the East Village and found Downtown Bakery, by far the best burrito in New York. My salvation. I especially reccommend the chicken mole burrito and the chorizo breakfast burrito...but I have yet to be disapointed by any of their offerings, so go wild. They may be no Pancho Villa Taqueria (SF), but they come damn, damn close.

Great fresh food
This place has the best burritos in the city. The food is always so fresh and the service is friendly. Great place to sit for a quick bite.

Burrito bliss
I've been hard pressed to find a mexican restaurant with pork offerings. I had been reliant on chipotle's carnitas until I discovered downtown bakery. The pork is incredible and the portions are huge. Definitely an excellent value for your money.

Mole mole mole, MOLE!
The BEST mole sauce, hands-down! Get the chicken enchiladas wth mole sauce. The pork tacos and chicken mole tacos are great too. Everything is really fresh, made to order, and costs $5-7. A gem.
