Eat Here. Eat Now. Eat Well.
I've resisted writing about this place for years it's so good I feard large crowds and long lines once word got out. But I must give up: THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. The ingredients are of the highest quality, the recipes come from the mom of the guys who work there. The chipotle sauce is to die for, and they have everything from meat free vegan standard burritos to chorizo tacos. Oh and the monolithic servings are dirt cheap. Don't be scared away by the mom and pop tables and slightly cracked window this place is top end. I promise you will love it and return regularly. Try: Pollo Desmenuzado bean and cheese tacos rice and bean burrito special with guacamole, sour cream and hot sauce chicken tamales with hot sauce (I like chipotle) or anything with chorizo in it.

Amazing Mexican Food!
Being from California, I have had amazing Mexican food. Most Mexican places in New York do not even have a blip on the radar. I walked into this unassuming place one late afternoon and after striking up a conversation some of the very nice workers there, I was advised to get the Chicken Mole Burrito. Honestly, the first bite I had was so delicious. I knew that I would be definitely be going back soon. Since then, I have been back a few more times and tried other food that they offer (Nachos, Flautas, Tamales, Tacos, Crispy Quesadillas), and I have never been disappointed. I highly recommend this place!

Best true Mexican food to go in NYC
I just wanted to add to the other positive reviews about Downtown Bakery. I grew up in California which has excellent, authentic, Mexican food. I have lived in the East Village for 5 years and constantly sought good burritos, tacos, etc. Overall New York has an exteme lack of tasy authentica mexican. Burritoville, San Loco, and the other imitators have nothing on Downtown Bakery. Aside from Mama Mexico, when I want mexican, this is the only place I eat. As others have noted this is a family run buisness. Sometimes it takes 30-45 minutes for delivery, but this is Mexican with authentic flavor, like what mom would make. Sometimes she evem delivers it! Dont be discouraged by the store, and make sure you go to the right one, as you can taste the difference. Their Carne Asada Burrito compares to what you would find in San Diego or San Francisco, but watch out for too much hot sauce, it is smoking!! Highly recommend the steak tacos and rejenos, and stop in for Breakfast their menu is huge and cheap.

Best Mexican in the East Village
Don't let the look of this place scare you. It does look like a hole in the wall but that is the best kind of place to get great mexican. This place is family owned, so support your neighbors and shop local. So this place has some excellent mexican food. I usually stick to the Bean and Cheese burrito with the queso blanco but I had the xoaco cheese as well. Trust me I am a native Southern Californian...try this place, you will not be let down. The two sons of the owner are super cool and totally respect their customers.

hidden gem
Quality Mexican food is hard to come by in the city. At Downtown Bakery, the food is delicious and authentic, granted I have only tried the chicken burrito. The burrito surprisingly is all white meat, with rotisserie chicken skin, which with the blend of rice and beans is quite tasty. Best burrito in New York. The service is alittle slow, but the food is well worth the wait.

Best Mexican in NYC that I'm aware of
I am extremely happy that I happened upon this place a couple of years ago. It has great food. It's a small restaurant with a family vibe to it. I've taken so many people there and all of them were amazed at how delicious the food was. I generally stick to the tacos and burritos. I'm not very adventurous, but one day I'll get there. The workers are quite nice and if you'd like to eat in you just take a seat and they will bring the food to you when it is ready. Patience is a virtue! The wait can sometimes be a bit long...especially if you are getting your food delivered, but the wait is well worth it when you get a taste of the food! It's really good. Occasionally, I've had my order mixed up but most of the time it is right on. If you'd like a taco with "real" beef and not mystery meat then this is the place to go! Also, the meat is very tasty and quite good on its own. Do yourself a favor and check this place out.
