    real mexican!

Whoever is giving this place bad reviews isn't used to authentic mexican food. Moving from Cali, I really missed good Mexican food in New York. There's good fusion/fancy spots but when i want that nice greasy authentic Mission-style burrito, NYC is not a great place to be. Thank god a friend introduced me to downtown mexican bakery. Everything else I've tried sucks and I'm only sad that I just found out about it recently.

    I love Downtown Bakery

I eat here several times a week as I live around the corner. I never get tired of their food. Great value, everything is made fresh, and the people who work there are super-friendly.

    Don't Order from here...

While the food is so so the service is horrible especially while delivering. I have been ordering from hear for awhile as my go to mexican but not any more. The tomatillo sauce that they put on everything, even when the menu doesnt say it, is disgusting and waaaaay too hot. I could not even eat my dinner and when I called them they didnt say anything to fix the problem and said we shouldnt have ordered it. Guess what.. I will order from another of the 1000 mexican places on the LES. The food is not good enough to be abused by a guy on the phone.

    Never had it.

My friends in the neighborhood all rave about this place, but I gave Downtown Bakery a 0 because out of 5 times of trying to order from them, its been 5 fails. The first time I called I got hung up on, then they didn't answer when I called back. The second and third time I called they said they weren't doing deliveries that day. The fourth time I tried to call repeatedly for 1 hour and the phone was busy. I just called for the 5th time and FINALLY placed an order.... and 1 1/2 hours later it never showed up. I will NEVER call them for an order again.

if u haven't tried it, ur loss

This place is terrific. Great staff, great authentic food (they actually make real tamales here!) and great price. It is a jewel of the EV/LES. I'm shocked at some of the bad reviewers - maybe they just don't know a good thing when they see it. For special rec, try some of their sandwiches ("tortas"), they aren't as simple as the menu describes them. Also, real chilaquiles for breakfast! Wow. And fantastic horchata. Can't say enough good things. The one occasional bad is delivery can be a problem on very busy nights, like when it's pouring or snowing or abominable weather. Sometimes they don't even answer the phone. That's cause they are real people, not a chain or a fancy faux eatery.
