    Yay, this place is awesome!!

Allow me to rave with a capital R over how great this restaurant is! I've always liked Public (same chef) but I never wanted to venture over to Double Crown because it's new and it seemed like a magnet for the lame trend-oid crowd. Finally I succumbed, because my boyfriend has a thing for British food and I have a thing for Asian food so this seemed like a good match. Damn, this was the very definition of a good match. We started with the prawns with Mary Rose sauce for him (deep fried prawn head meets the best shrimp cocktail ever) and yellowtail sashimi for me (delicate flavors, lovely presentation - could eat this every day of my life - psych, every other day). On to the most amazing snapper with shrimp gyoza and some other japanese somethings-or-other (for me), and elk wellington for my man. Seriously - elk wellington on the fricking Bowery, how awesome is that!? I will tell you. Awesome and delicious and perfectly cooked - so my boyfriend says. I was way too engrossed in my dish to even touch his. We capped the whole thing off with sweet samosas for dessert. Heaven. Wish I could remember more about them, but we'd already polished off a few too many lemongrass martinis to recall the details. In short: Double Crown yay, food yay, crowd eh (but what do you expect for a new restaurant, the crowd's always lame), cocktails super yay. Happy Bowery to me!

    YUM with a captal "Y"

This place has the best french fries called "Daikon Fries" in the world. They are also have the coolest looking room to dine in. We ate ourselves silly- with a spiced chicken dish in a light broth and a perfectly cooked steak that had some asian treatment to it. Drinks were well done too with a nice, handsome australia bartender to boot. I am sold.

Great atmosphere and fun Sat night

I don't agree with the reviews below- found the service to be courteous and efficient, from hostess to server. Our reservations were honored, we were given the option to sit indoors or outside, and weren't rushed in the least. The seared yellowtail starter was delicious, and the day we were there they had a sea bass, cooked perfectly. The portions are not huge, but were adequate for me. Cocktails are really good but expensive- watch out when the bill comes! Overall a fun night, decent food if a bit overpriced. Gorgeous space too!

Beware of restaurants serving 'deconstructed' dishes...

Last night our dessert, bitter chocolate trifle with Devon cream and English toffee, was a perfect metaphor for this disappointingly uneven restaurant on the Bowery. The waiter said it was "a deconstructed" trifle and big enough to share for 4. It arrived as a shallow, tiny bowl of chocolate mousse, garnished with a small cube of sponge, dollop of cream, crushed chocolate biscuit crumbs and a shard of thumb-sized toffee jutting out of it. Decent mousse it was, but no trifle and certainly not enough to share. The same goes for the restaurant- attractive, expensive décor in a beautiful airy space, but look closer and the seemingly splashy individual loos are lined with rich wallpaper until your eyes notice the break near the bottom of the walls exposing plain cinderblock. As if the money for wallpaper ran out. The braised short rib, the most expensive entrée, supposedly comes with roasted parsnips and brussels sprouts. In reality, this prehistoric sized short rib bone arrives with decent, moist meat clinging to it, but where are the sprouts? All we see is a garnish of sprout leaves. The waiter said we could order a side of them even though the menu said they accompany the dish. The yellowfin tuna was such an anemic sized plate of food, it was embarrassing. Not worth a second visit at all.

    Very Enjoyable

Had a friends birthday party here - was great for large groups. Had drinks at the bar to begin - fantastic friendly bartenders & sensational creative drinks - try the chilli foam tangerine one!!!! Service was very attentive and knowledgeable. The food was crazy good - the calimari and brussels sprouts - I am still craving . We shared a lot of dishes and the recommendations were the chicken asian salad, duck steamed buns, snapper, tuna and the over-sized short rib. Had drinks in the secret back bar afterwards and who would have known that Jam in your cocktails with a silver spoon would be sooooo good!!!! Marcy our cocktail waitress that night was super sweet and very helpful ....... check it out for sure!

    good food? i wouldn't know

I wish I could review here. Sadly I can only review the service because me and my group of six girls never actually got to eat anything. We made reservations a month ago but upon arriving at the restaurant we were sat at the worst table in the house, the table reserved for walkins. It's right next to the bar and the door so you get a double bonus, people standing over you with their drinks and a cold draft of air everytime somone opens the door. Which is every few minutes. When we explained that we were unhappy, the hostess told us there was nothing she could do. The manager stood by and watched as one after the other of our group went up to say something to the hostess. Finally, when I was up there I said that we were going to leave and eat elsewhere. At this point, the manager finally decided to say something and told us she would get us a table within 30 minutes. Flash to two hours later and we're still sitting at the same shoddy table nursing our drinks. I think we were hoping the manager would turn things around for us but when it became apparent that they had just decided to ignore us, we left. So I don't know how the food is. The drinks were alright, solid dirty martini and some pear concoction. The point is, three of us who were there work in the service industry. We're not rude. We didn't yell at the manager or the hostess, just explained that as a group of girls having their holiday dinner we were really expecting more than the worst table in the house. And none of the management could careless. So I wouldn't go back. We went elsewhere and had an amazing time.

    i never got to eat

they ruined our night. my girlfriends and I went out tonight for our holiday get together. I made reservations 4 weeks ago and when we get there, they sit us at the very front of the restaurant by the bar on a communal table. when we ask them to move us towards the back of the empty table because it was 23 degrees outside and the cold wind was blowing on us, they refused. after complaining again they final agreed to move us downstairs in 20 minutes. an hour goes by and nothing. they finally agrees to comp us a round of drinks and promised to be moved in another 15 minutes. another hour goes by and we are freezing and starving. all they can do is tell us they tried their best while in the meantime a party our size who came after us was seating in the back. which looked cute, but i wouldn't know because we sat by the door the entire time with elbows to the back of head. DO NOT GO HERE. they are so unorganized and do not care about treating people right. we only waited two hour to get nothing. we happened to be tipsy enough to not mind not eating. ended up going to Gemma and it was perfect!
