Good...not great
As UWS residents we had been meaning to try Ditch Plains for awhile, but were put off by some of the negative reviews. I will start by saying we had absolutely NO complaints about the service. We were seated right away and our server was great. She was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was nice. It is a good space where you won't feel like your table neighbor is sitting in your lap. Nice bar too. The food was (you guessed it)...good, not great--especially for the price--which is a little high for a neighborhood spot. But it was good enough that we will be back.

Not recommended
Though people at the bar seemed happy (alcohol can do that, which may be why it's called "spirits") the restaurant area was lifeless and dull, both the crowd and the decor. The food's just OK- although not overly expensive, it's not a good value. I would typify the cuisine as "pub food". The service, however, was close to excellent. By the way, be warned- The place has a full bar but doesn't serve any wine by the glass. They only offer bottles and half bottles. That was a first- I've never been to any Manhattan restaurant that has that policy. I was there with two friends, longtime Westsiders, and not one of us has the desire to ever go back.

If they fixed a few things...
Was excited to try the newest seafood place in my neighborhood. Walked in with 2 friends at 7:30pm on a Saturday night, and the friendly host seated us in just a few minutes. Our waitress friendly, but wasn't really paying attention. She arrived and asked us for our drink orders, but we'd never been given beverage menus. She retrieved one for us, then returned about 60 seconds later to ask if we were ready yet - we'd not yet had time to circulate the one 2-sided drink menu around the whole table yet (also asked if we were done as 2 people had their hands in the french fry basket, obviously still eating). Wanted to order a mojito, but were told they were out because they didn't have any fresh mint (but are 2 blocks from a grocery store...). Appreciate that they offer many 1/2 bottle of wine selections, but wish they would offer at least one wine by the glass. Most annoying part? I ordered fish tacos, and the waitress asked if I wanted cheese, sour cream and guacamole on the side, so I said "sure". Although not mentioned by the waitress and not listed on the menu in any way, was charged $7 for these "extras" - $2 for each of the cheese and sour cream and $3 for the guacamole, all in little containers the size of the ketchup that came in the french fry basket. Not cool. The food was good and the atmosphere pleasant, but slipping pricey charges onto the bill for extras with no mention in advance will do nothing to ensure repeat business. Hope they realize this and make adjustments, as this could be a great addition to the neighborhood.

There are soo many better options
Worst service ever - must be too much to ask for to hope to get your food within 45 min of ordering Would have been better if they didn't wait a half a hour to take our order too....

Disappointing
Went here with a group of friends for a birthday party. It's a large, casual spot with a comfortable feel. Lots of servers who seem to be falling over each other and don't seem to have a lot of experience. But they try hard and are pleasant. The cheddar jalapeƱo tater toy appetizers are the best thing on the menu. If I ever go back, I'll just have a couple orders of those. The calamari are small and rubbery. As far as mains, nothing stood out. The beef was just OK. The broiled fish was tragically overcooked. The fish in the fish and chips was oily and without much flavor. The fries were seasoned and the first few were tasty. But underneath the first few, the rest were ignored and quite plain. The desserts are imaginative and good but seriously overpriced. This place can make a few improvements and be very good, or take another step back and be very bad. I won't go back unless they figure it out.

Awesome late night dinner
Went for a late Friday night dinner around 12:30. Great service - our waiter was awesome and had a great sense of humor. We didn't feel rushed at all (but being the only group eating probably had a lot to do with it). Bar was busy and had a decent crowd. Great wine (malbec), apps (try the fried pickles - great!), and dinner (fish tacos). We liked this place so much we stayed for dessert ( ice cream sandwiches ). Will definitely be back. Don't know what it's like during peak hours but we usually avoid those times to go eat
